maricopa county sheriff joe arpaio says he's not going to be running, and he may be emboldened by theoll that 51% of the folks in arizona think that this law is okay. the sheriff joins us tonight from arizona. joe, good to have you with us tonight. what do you make of this poll, 51% of arizonans think that this law is about right? >> well, i thought it was 70%. i don't know what poll you're talking about. but most people here in arizona like this new law. you know, i've been enforcing these type of laws for three years. really haven't had any problems. so i don't know why everybody is -- >> well, actually, you have had some problems if you're being investigated for racial profiling, but -- >> well, wait a minute, let me answer that, ed. that's been a year-and-a-half that the justice department civil rights has been floating around this county, and nothing has happened. so they can investigate all they want. >> okay. so you're totally innocent of that. but to say that it -- that you've been enforcing the law in the eyes of some, you've been somewhat overbearing, or is that an overstate

and sheriff joe arpaio of maricopa county has been enforcing those laws for a long time now and is facing the heat from eric holder and implicitly from president obama and as janet napolitano who knows him well, made remarks that would imply that she has come to a conclusion that there were biased violations of people's civil rights under the enforcement of sheriff joe arpaio. no basis for it but they stirred up that the american people believed there was a basis for it. i looked at tencht city down in phoenix. -- tent city down in phoenix and if i remember my numbers, but 1/3 of the inmates are there for being illegal and 2/3 being there for other reasons. they are there in striped uniforms and get pink underwear and it's not the nicest place. we don't want it to be advertised as a nice place to come back to. that's why we have jails. but this situation in arizona, we got to stand with them. i stand with governor brewer. i stand also with representative pearce in arizona for the work he has done and he is very articulate in stepping up to defend immigration law. i encourage and look forw

the additional resources that the committee appropriated in the wake of darby and the maricopa explosions and fires made aa important contribution to mine safety in this country. additional inspectors hired have been able to complete all mandated expect it -- inspections. but we need new resources, including new enforcement tools to leverage the capability into meaningful deterrence against operators that choose not to take responsibility. some of the new tools are directed at creating incentives for operators to prevent fatalities and injuries. our goal is to create a system in which mining operators find and fix violations and abate hazardous conditions. we will impose a rule for pre- shift examinations for violations on health and safety standards on acquiring the list of management programs. improving protection for whistleblowers providing important tools for the dangers and practices as well as violations on fidelity injuries. miners must feel free to identify problems and insist that they be fixed without fear of reprisal. there is subpoena power to obtain information for timely in
