a short time ago i spoke to the bbc‘s mariko 0i in pasang kayu. she's on her way to palu.started driving from the city of makassar, in the south of the island, driving for around 20 hours. it is taking a lot longer than we expected but we finally arrived at this police station, where we are waiting for instructions on how to be escorted into palu because of reported looting. survivors of the earthquake and tsunami are desperate for food and water and there have been reports that some of the cars going into the area have been looted, so we're waiting for the escort into the area. we are still 200 kilometres away from palu, so it is still going to take several hours to get there. but along the way, babita, i saw some of the infrastructure, i guess, of indonesia's countryside, which could be quite similar to what we had in palu, some of the houses built by wood and brick, so very modestly built even along the coastline, probably not strong enough to withstand a strong earthquake or tsunami. so we have been witnessing that. but at the same time we also saw people standing on t

a short time ago, mariko oi gave this update from makassar in sulawesi. city of makassar, which is in the southern part of the sulawesi island. this is as far as we could get last night, as you can see, behind me is the airport and we have been booked to fly there later this morning. there are some confusions over whether we can actually catch that flight. until now, the palu airport has been shut for commercial flights, understandably, to give the priority to the chartered planes, helicopters to get those crucial supplies like water, food and fuel to those who survived the earthquake and the tsunami. as rescuers get to grips with the situation, there are fears that the death toll could rise. indeed, at the moment the official figure is just over 800 but even when the authorities announced that number yesterday on sunday, they warned that it could rise further, it could actually be in the thousands. of course, indonesia is prone to these earthquakes. only just about two months ago in early august, several strong earthquakes hit the island of lombok, as we
