he served in the marine corps first marine expeditionary force, first marine division. he died may 28, 1967. age at the time of death was 20 years old. his uncle a united states marine, sponsored him so that he as a canadian, could enlist in the united states marine corps. paul was proud to volunteer and served the united states as a marine so he could fight communism. paul signed a noncitizen waiver so he could serve in country in vietnam with his unit. one story that his friends recall is on a hunting trip paul was so proud of his service as a u.s. marine that when he went home for christmas after basic training, his friends joked that paul didn't take his uniform off once. david birdall was born january 16 1953. he grew up in minot. served in the army, 101st airborne division. his date of death is stated to be january 20, 1972. he was 19 years old when he went missing. david is the first son born of 13 children. his family remembers him as always helping others. during the minot flood of 1969, the family moved to safety but david stayed in town sandbagging all night

in 2004 i was out of the marine corps at this point and was an embedded reporter in iraq. i came back and noticed immediately getting off the plane in california and just feeling very different. going to a bar in looking over. my best friend took me to this bar near the airport and we went to this club and an intimate scene. i remember looking at the people and i could tell everyone is drinking and talking and socializing and just as they had before as if nothing had changed and i remember there was no particular reason to feel angry or upset but it struck me that i had changed. i remember oddly not being suddenly very bored and uninterested with what was going on inside the barn i left. i stepped out and i think i went to the local liquor store. one interesting thing about san diego is all of the liquor stores are run by call the in iraqi's. the owner of the store was from baghdad so i ended up talking with him. i was just off the plane not really fitting in and what do i do? i walk out the door and there were some iraqi and he's from baghdad. it was this very strange fee

's, i'm raising my family here, i came back here after the law school, i came back here after the marines. another thing to point out was i was in private practice for a couple years before i left to join the marines. in the marine corps from 2004 to 2008, i had a pretty diverse speerbs there, i served as a judge advocate representing service members and advising them on a wide range of interests and at the end of my commitment i also served with an infantry battalion in iraq. after we got back home i eased, received an honorable discharge, came back to cooly which was the law firm i was practicing with before i joined the marines. i think if you look at my application you'll see i have a commitment to public service. that's something that was instilled in my by my parents but also schools here in san francisco, i went to public school, high school so when you look at my application you have somebody really committed to doing something for others and you can see that in my leaving private practice first for the marine corps and most recently to serve as a prosecutor with the u.s. attorney
