there is no exclusive marine corps military academy. they do get a certain percentage from the naval academy, but i went through officer candidate school. >> host: why'd you volunteer? >> guest: why'd i volunteer? i was already in the navy. i did two years as a hospital corpsman on the uss ticonderoga which was involved in the gulf of tonkin incident in 1964. after i left active duty, i went back and finished my degree. but while it was going on, i saw what was developing in vietnam and i knew it was going to be the biggest issue for my generation. and i had a question with myself should i go because i already did my time. and there were a lot of people in my class in my peer group who were very supportive of president johnson. and they were all for it. but let the other guy go. and that really did something to me too. and i also, as a hospital corpsman, i had a camaraderie with the marine corps detachment on the ticonderoga. so i put all these things together and on top of that i met a young woman and we decided to get married -- >> ho
