marines make headlines again, marines land. but one thing that happens at vera cruz is the navy says we can no longer do landing parties because they go ashore in their navy whites and go into the streets of vera cruz and are shot down from all directions. so really, they just gave up on them. we no longer go against that. so the marines saw their mission of going ashore from the ships. but the point is that the army brigade comes in to replace the navy and marines that are ashore, you have already heard his name, funston. and the marines are supposed to go back aboard board the ships. and lejeune says to the admiral, i really want to stay and be part of this occupation. i want to go alongside the army. and the admiral says, are you sure? be careful what you ask for. he said yeah, i wanna go. they let the marines stay ashore and become part of the army brigade under funston. so funston is a guy that could work with both marines and army. he was not opposed to them. i appreciate the reinforcements. and they remain in vera cruz,

marines off. they would have been basically guarding the navy ports, navy yards, basically cops. it was defeated. how was it defeated? it was defeated because the american public rose up. one of the marines fathers was head of the naval affairs committee and basically brought it to america's attention. and they said, no, we want marines. a lot of it was based on china and guantanamo bay. you can start to see people are getting irritated with these marines. once the army, especially, so they survive. and then comes 1914 and vera cruz. and the marines have almost gone out of business this time by the navy. and they said marines, we challenge you to make a landing, put up heavy naval weapons and participate in the 1914 naval exercises. and if you can't do it, your funding is gone. so luckily, john, the greatest naval commander of all, takes command of it. he takes that unit down there to calebra and succeeds in planting the guns and bringing in some aviation into the fleet exercises. so it's another
