in the marine band.out 13 years of age. it was his assignment to learn the art and mystery of music. music was not to be too much of a mystery to him, because by 1880, he had progressed to the point to be named the leader of the marine band. his name was john philip sousa and he was a very illustrious bandleader. the 12 years he was leader of the marine and, he wrote many great marches. i am sure there are many b andsmen in the country that associate his name not only with a great marches that he wrote , but the instrument that bears his name, the sousaphone. we have the original sousaphone made by the company in elkhart indiana. usually you can only see this in the museum of science and industry in chicago. in this particular case, the bell of the instrument extends directly upward. i want to call your attention to the uniform. it is our famous uniform and trimmed in black-and-white. it is one that we know that members of the marine band have worn for 80 years. we are going to play a sousa march. i know
