this is the second deadly incident this week involving a marine aircraft.et crashed near san diego thursday killing the pilot. just last year, nine marines died in two separate accidents involving ospreys, one near san diego and one in norway. the military exercises, which were supposed to continue until september 7th, are on pause for now as the crash investigation continues. >> thank you. >>> tonight, more than 50 million people are under heat alerts as a dangerous triple digit temperature scorch the south. in louisiana, it's very hard for firefighters battling the largest wildfire in that state's history. there's new trouble churning off the shore. let's bring in hurricane specialist dr. rick nabb from the weather channel. good evening. >> it's so important for everybody to focus on and prepare for what is forecast to become, not what it is now. it's go being to start moving, and it's going to get stronger than it is now over the northwestern caribbean. the new track forecast from the hurricane center, they have always been forecasting an intensification

here at home, the fire chiefs from marin county and central marin spoke about ways people should be prepared and again, one of the important things they talked about, making sure you have all the trees and brush cleared away from the outside walls of your home and property. so you look at what occurred in line and that fire spread and it really wasn't the vegetation as much as it became structured to structure ignition. and that's what we're seeing in these fires that have substantial losses. you look at coffee park in santa rosa or some of the other examples, there's many. this is building to building ignition in . so again, getting rid of anything around your property that can ignite or help with that building to building transmission is one of the top ways you can protect your property. fire safety officials also talked about improved evacuation routes. they were closely studied in marin county after the tubbs fire and camp fire. in recent years, marin county officials say they are confident they have cleared enough brush around some major roadways so that you don't have to worry about po

marines have been killed in a helicopter crash in australia and the helicopter the marines were on has been involved in other fatal crashes before. five more marines are in the hospital on the mainland with critical injuries. for the very latest on this we go live to nbc news's raf sanchez. what do we know about what led to this crash. >> reporter: good morning. we don't know very much at this stage. the investigation is under way it's not clear if this was some technical malfunction, a pilot error or if this was something else. we do know these u.s. marines were taking part in a training exercise alongside australian forces and that there were 23 people on board that aircraft when it crashed. three of them were killed, their bodies remain at the crash site and, as you said, another five marines are in serious condition in hospital in northern australia. the remaining marines on board either in hospital with less serious injuries or they've been discharged by this point. now, they were flying on board what's called an on pray, this is an air forecast that takes off like a helicopter, i

so, what can be done about this marine heatwave?ct as much data as possible — that's everyone from meteorologists to oceanographers to marine biologists like myself — to really try and understand the impact of this event on organisms and on the physical state of the ocean. for myself, i am a coral reef restoration specialist, so we are working on actually restoring reefs in this event and how the reefs fared during this event will give us information as to how we can improve our methods going forward in the face of continued climate change. and katey, last question — you said it might not feel like a big difference to us, this temperature change in the ocean. what's your message to americans and people around the world, really, of why they need to pay attention to this? so, this is important because coastal communities all around the world, and even near coastal communities, depend on the ocean and healthy marine ecosystems, whether that's as a food source or a source of tourism revenue from people coming to see beautiful reefs all
