boulevard are some alternative routes. >>> and happening today, a new commute for folks in the east bay. ferry service returned to berkeley this morning. we are live at the berkeley marina. this is a trial or a permanent thing? >> reporter: well this is a pilot program. so if it is suck is sesful, then the ferry operator could add additional rides on more days of the week. at this point, it is only launching on fridays at 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. with two return trips in the evening. all aboard for the first time in more than ten years. public ferry service has returned to berkeley. a private company called tide line launched the vessel from the berkeley marina and cruised into san francisco for the maiden voyage this morning. it drops passengers at pier 1.5 and takes them back in the evening. >> there is no other ferry service here. and it is unbelievably close to take the ferry from here right into the downtown san francisco. >> reporter: the ride takes about 25 minutes. it is a small vessel. but only holds up to 40 passengers. larger ferries can hold 300 or 400. >> yeah, it is a little -- it is not as smooth as the big ferries, but it still gets up on a plain and goes like
