a brigade of marines, by the french. the battle itself is iconic in marine corps history. there is no other world war i battlefield for the americans that is set up like a national park service battlefield in the united states. in 1965, this monument was dedicated. it is the archetype of a marine, looking tough with his shirt off. there were two regiments of marines that fought in this area. the fifth and sixth. it was an army division. the marines probably had more experience than the army at the time of world war i. they had been deployed around the world in the caribbean. but general pershing didn't want the marines to be part of it. it took heavy lobbying in congress with the help of the commandant of the marine corps. finally pershing acquiesced and allowed two regiments. the 5th and 6th. they would make a stand here and suffered heavily over a month of fighting. during that period they had over 10,000 wounded and killed. it is thought 1800 marines were killed. let's take a look at some of the areas and show how the marines fought during that period of june 5 through
