so, guiding the mariners and making sure they were in line was very important. this light provided safe habrbor for mariners on lake huron, which could prove to be treacherous in october, and november of those years. it was a very strategic lighthouse for those reasons. this lighthouses operational, fort gratiot is also operational from time to time. it's a military installation. as the needs came to be the fort would be used. it was garrisoned in the 1830's w-- in a devastating part of our history here, that affected the fort and the surrounding area. it was re-garrisoned during the civil war. the 27th michigan infantry would be mustered into service there. and learn their tactics and training at fort gratiot, and then would go on to point south. after the civil war, you're going to see dramatic changes at the fort gratiot light station. there is an increase in traffic for westward expansion, so the site is going to grow. the lighthouse service is realizing that a lot of their lighthouses are out of date, need some upgrades. so, this lighthouses going to see a
