i knew marion barry for years. there's one anecdote that leaps to mind, and he and i talked about it often. it was an example of his true character. some may know i once served as executive director of what was then known as the association for retarded citizens. one of our key goals was to move people with intellectual disabilities from an inhumane institution named forest haven into community living in the district of columbia. in was fierce opposition so many neighborhoods to group homes. unfortunately supported by some of the worst myths imaginable. one evening i was with mayor barry in an affluent community where the district was seeking to establish a home. nearly 200 people showed up and packed this room for this meeting. and they only had one purpose. the purpose was to stop this home from opening. once mayor barry had finished his presentation, there was a man who immediately rose and began to pepper him with questions. when it became clear that the man's inquiries 45d no constructive purpose, mayor barry

i'm in the marion park neighborhood and you can see a trash truck, surrounded by water on all sides, one car did not make it to higher ground and the water was up to the windows of that car. people here are familiar with nor'easters and know they need to get the cars to higher grounds and this acme is filled with cars but nobody is in the store. we talked to the director of emergency management a little while ago and he had this assessment of the situation in ocean city. >> overall we faired a little better than what the worst of the predictions were. this could have been a half foot higher that would have been a ten-year's event. >> the water came up close to covering 34th street but never made it across. they are calling it a typical nor'easter in ocean city, they know the neighbors will flood and nothing compared to sandy and nothing compared to the nor'easter of veterans day in 2009, where there was serious flooding here. they fear it will blow the water out of town and they feel like they doned a bullet here today. david henry, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. >>> stay on
