[applause] >> thank you for the very kind introduction and thank you, everyone for coming. it's a pleasure to be here today in your beautiful city, and i just want to briefly talk about the goal of this book as well as what the main research question is that this book tries to address. as well as stay become immigration is a central part of the united states that were often thought about at the country of immigrants, which we are, and today more than ever immigration is playing a very salient role in american politics. in the past 40 years, the u.s. has transformed tremendously demographically. today those who are foreign-born make up 12% of the population, and with the change also comes racial change in the sense that latinos have now surpassed blacks as the largest racial and ethnic group in the united states, making up 17% of the population. and by 205 2050 demographers prt that white's wilbur's majority status. and so this demographic transformation raises both hopes and fears. it
