senator mark pryor, mary landrieu, kay hagan, and mark begich.l red states that have democratic senators up for re-election. >> right. in all of these states, president obama lost in 2012. in some cases by substantial margins. so they are facing headwinds, these are states that are going republican. and in each of these cases, these candidates are in extraordinarily vulnerable positions. landrieu is a very good politician, she's at about 40% in the polls. in the case of begich, who won in a freakish election against a senator who had charges trumped up against him, he's at 39% approval rating. in arkansas, mark pryor is on the verge of already having lost this race to the incredibly impressive freshman congressman tom cotton. he's circumstansix, seven point already. very impressive person. and in north carolina, kay hagan is down against three different challengers. >> she's getting beat in the polls against everybody. >> and in all of these cases, the issue is very simple. every one of these senators was the 60th vote for obamacare. so that is a

there are a bunch of democratic incumbents facing very tough races, mark begich in alaska, mark pryor in arkansas, mary landrieu in louisiana, kay hagan in north carolina, an open seat in michigan and to a lesser extent another one in iowa. but none of the democrats are goners. democratic incumbents. but they are facing extremely difficult races. the conventional wisdom is that mark pryor from arkansas is toast. i wouldn't say toast, but you know when you put a piece of white bread in the toaster oven and it starts having a little bit of that beige look -- [laughter] so it's not toast, but it's kind of pretoast. [laughter] and so, anyway, when you kind of go through the numbers, you say, wow, republicans probably ought to get the six. and then you say, wait, wait, they've got two that they have to defend, an open seat in georgia which depends on whether republicans nominate a, what i call a normal chromosomal alignment republican -- [laughter] or whether they nominate my wife is trying to get me to stop using the termback coe, so i'm going with exotic and potentially problematic. begich and landrieu and pryor. it's stuff that goes to udall and shaheen. it could even be gillespie in virginia runs against mark warner. in other words, steve, you've been in the consulting game a while. objectively how bad is the democratic story right now here in the middle of march? >> i won't sit here and pretend like the president's numbers are something the democrats are gleeful about, but if you look at where the electorate is today and you compare to 2012 when president obama was going into re-election, two things. the sour mood of the electorate was present then and many thought whoever the republican nominee was would beat president obama. and what happens is there is a reason that you have a campaign and there is a reason that you have an election. and that is because you cannot -- it's one thing for people to say i'm in the happy with the economy or the in-consume bent. it's quite another thing to say i prefer the alternative.the in-consume bent. it's quite another thing to say i prefer the alternative. and as the republicans nominate tea party candidate, you'll see that the voter in the middle, the
