and mark do we know what this bill contains? >> yes, we know that, brian, it doesn't have amendments because it's what the senate passed with a vote only eight senators voted against it. 89 senators voted for it, and this bill says that if you make $400,000 or a family 450,000, just kidding, you would be taxed, the rate of tax would go up from 36 point something to 39 percent. you know the president said he wouldn't go up over 250 and he did. now up to 450. these tax republicans are very pleased. the bush tax cuts for everybody else would be permanent. people who are on unemployment, that's 2 million long term would continue to get unemployment checks. they had something to do with the estate tax, 40% after the first 5 million being exact, and they fiddled around with the alternative minimum tax so more people wouldn't have to pay that. >> this will get spun a million ways. taxes are going up for a significant portion of the country. >> that was the payroll tax holiday which was supposed to be an economic stimulus program. if you make $50,000 a year, your

brian ross reporting. >> this year's president obama's inauguration, as you know, falls on the martin luther king holiday. markatthews spoke with the world's foremost authority on dr. king. the question, if they could have met, what would the leader of the civil rights movement, who was murdered in memphis, what would he have to say to president obama about guns and violence in our society? >> claiborne carson was just 19 years old when he stood on the washington mall on a hot august afternoon and listened to martin luther king describe his dream for america. >> four years ago he was back on the mall in the freezing call to watch barack obama take the oath of office. like many who were involved in what carson calls the movement, he wondered what now? >> now that he has the power of the presidency, what is he going to do to bring king's dream into reality? >> carson believes dr. king would urge the president to take on the harder, more complex issues underlying gun violence. >> the problem with violence is not simply a problem of availability of guns. it's a climate. it's a culture. >> for king it was an issue

>>brian: twa two weeks ago when mark rubio came to this couch and said i got this plan for immigration reform. and dick durbin said we've come together with a gang of eight with a plan for immigration reform and unveiled it yesterday. it seems there is a bipartisan push to get something done this year. >>steve: four republicans and four democrats are behind this. what's interesting is notice on the top shelf, you've got dick durbin. back in 2007 when george w. bush had his proposal to reform immigration with the guest worker program, it was dick durbin and then-senator barack obama who gutted the guest worker provision out of that immigration reform and effectively killed it off. so it's great that now durbin is on board along with a number of republicans. the big question is, though, later today we're going to hear from the president. is the president really serious about immigration reform? after all, marco rubio has been out there, but has the white house reached out to him so far? absolutely not. >>gretchen: here's the plan they're talking about, this gang of eight. register and pa

brian. >> good to see you, buddy. here's to a terrific 2013. the fiscal cliff deal moving the commodity marks as well. a few blocks to the east and go to sharon epperson to the nymex. >> brian, happy new year to you. in oil and metals, we have brent crude prices rallying, pretty much across the board. when you look at the fact that the fiscal cliff deal was averted, and the risk on among the traders, brent crude prices approaching what we may see is a new technical level. above 112 lds a barrel. the next level to watch is $113.25. the 200 moving day moving average for the first time since september, we're looking at a high since september for u.s. oil futures and even gold prices are moving higher here. continuing this when we've seen 12 straight years for positive gains for the gold market. but traders say a key is the close above the 1,682 level. there is a down side to look at, and that is what happened to natural gas prices. natural gas prices hit a high overnight. we've seen heavy volume in a bit of a recovery here in natural gas prices. still, above normal temperatures are forecast for the next
