let's go back to mark fuhrman. mark, you were talking about the fact in a situation like this, the suspect just has nothing to lose. of course, as an officer, you want to make sure that you stay safe, as well as -- you know, everyone around you. what is the biggest challenge for them right now? >> caller: well, the biggest challenge is to set the perimeter up large enough that you contain the suspect within that perimeter. then you establish a tighter perimeter to make sure the suspect can't get out. everybody's on guard, and you try to control all the officers from actually probing until you get s.w.a.t. teams, k-9 units and specialized units that are equipped, not only with more body armor, but they are equipped with weapons and they can work as a unit to start clearing areas, section by section. certainly, they use the k-9 to see if they can key on the trail. they will try to isolate a certain area. then they pull back and they make a tactical plan to start clearing that area, you know, room to room or area by ar

we bring in former lapd detective mark fuhrman. mark, your initial impression with all of this? >> well, i was hoping for the best, which would be they had a good suspect lead, a possible surveillance going of possible suspects, and that's why we were waiting 48 hours for another press conference, but unfortunately at the press conference, for me, it's one of the worst fears, but it's a good lead. they've exhausted cellphone, they've exhausted any kind of imaging of the bio metric structure of the face. i didn't see a reward. to me that kind of indicates that they believe that this is an international connection that really doesn't -- or isn't affected by a cash reward for family associates or cosuspects. >> sean: yeah. mark, going back on all your police experience, and i've watched this over and over again, and they seem to be relaxed. they seem to be very casual. they seem to be very focused, if you will, on what they want to do. they didn't stand out. if i saw them walking by me, i don't think i would have noticed them. would you? >> well, you know, it's interesting you say

mark fuhrman with me now. i'm curious to get your reaction based on the news of the hour and this is significant. marc? >> yeah, it is. and, you know, what's interesting about this last 48 hours is that the fbi and the task force for the combined law enforcement task force has been trying to close on the suspects with any hot leads or relevant leads that they could -- that they could acquire, trying to identify a named suspect, the location, so they could close, surveil, perhaps follow and actually control the situation. and they actually went as far as they could without notifying the public. now they believe, i'm sure, that they are hopeful that they lived in the area for whatever period of time, weeks, days, months. but, i think they believe that they are probably on the move. i'm kind of surprised that they didn't tell the public what the logos on the hats were. young people, they notice that. they notice the logos and sometimes it means very much not to us as older adults but to kids, where they hang out.

right now i want to speak to former lapd homicide detective mark fuhrman. for the police in and around boston trying to put a virtual fence in and around the city to stop this suspect considered armed and dangerous and believed to have committed several murders already from escaping. i mean, how is it done? >> first, megyn, when the fire fight is in progress, they're trying to establish a forward perimeter for the direction the suspect's going and then when the vehicle stops, the fire fight continues. they're trying to get air units up and units to surround an area large enough to encompass anybody that's on foot that fleece that vehicle or -- flees that vehicle or any other suspects that are involved. the trick is to make the perimeter large enough to contain the suspect or suspects but small enough to make it controllable. it's a judgment call that nobody can be right or nobody can be wrong. it is just an ongoing fluid situation tacticall tactically. when things calm down and you know what you have as they had one of the brothers, suspect one that was sho

mark fuhrman ace former homicide detective for the los angeles police department, and a fox news contributor those are the latest statistics that we have, mark. what do you make of just over the last several weeks news about awful these murder? what do you make of it? >> well the sign of the times is we're looking at really the success in a lot of third world countries of violence against government officials and the police, and one being just to the south in mexico. very effective. but i think there is probably socio-political influences on police departments to make them less proactive and more reactive and that is coming from the top down, it's not the choice of law enforcement. in other words, contacting and being very aggressive in contacting the known people who are crips and actually interest septembering them before they can -- intercepting them before they can launch their plan or hatch an idea of retaliation is some of the issues. there's always been violence again police. we look back at the 60s and the 70s certainly that was mart of the initiation to get into some groups. jenna:

mark fuhrman joins us. they almost did a surgical operation. he a alive, in custody, but it certainly was a great operation tonight, wasn't it? >> it certainly was. most of my questions since this perimeter was set up was it large enough and did the suspect before he was able to get outside the perimeter and was there enough personnel to seal it up. answer to both those questions is obviously yet. i have a feeling that he got as far as he could until the perimeter started closing in and he found that bet on. >> greta: what i don't understand, i hope in the days and weeks to come -- that this bombing was planned obviously. they had to make the bomb. they had to figure out a way to deliver them. they had to drop them and get out of there, but they stuck around. they didn't flee. this is their neighborhood, town and city. they never left. they never made a plan to get away. to me that is baffling. >> greta, i would agree. he can but i'm not sure he is going to answer that question. they didn't deploy all the ordinance at the marathon so i expect t
