i am mark gurman. this is power on. can sign up for mark's weekly newsletter at bloomberg.com. covid infections in new york city may have reached a peak. it has been about one month since the first case of the omicron variant was identified. the seven day average of people visiting new york emergency departments with covid like illnesses has dropped significantly since the end of december according to the city's department of health. jonathan levin joins us now. does it mean the peak has passed? jonathan: it strongly seems like new york has reached a peak. of course, what a peak means in practice is another question. typically once we see the peak in the seven day average of actual cases or infections, the impact on the hospital system can still go on for weeks. that's what we expect to see in intensive care units in new york city. emily: does not mean we could see more peaks or that more dangerous variants could still be down the line? jonathan: certainly, in terms of the near and present, omicron may be peaking in new

kriti: bloomberg's mark gurman, thank you very much.e time to highlight a chart of mine this week. our viewers will not know this, but today is guy johnson's birthday. he is anchoring with me, so i decided to take a look at what happened january 14, 1971, when guy johnson was born. that brings me to the pound, because there's no better chart. you have to go all the way back to the 1970's to see that the pound at $2.40, and since then we are hovering around $1.36 on the cable rate. what brings this to mind is simply that the pound has lost a dollar in guy johnson/time -- guy johnson's lifetime. that is something to take with you, and of course, he very happy birthday from bloomberg. guy: thank you very much, indeed. thank you for highlighting the 1971 bit. that age as me nicely at 51. certainly the purchasing power of the pound has gone down. i'm not sure exactly who to blame for that, but you can certainly feel it. i can tell you that. my purchasing power obviously when i come to the states doesn't quite go as far as it once did. irene
