mark halperin should she? >> elizabeth warren? >> yes. what do you think about -- first of all, i mean, it does seem like a set-up between president obama and hillary clinton a passing of the torch with this speech on tuesday. >> certainly this posture is very clintonesque of saying you know, a little bit more from the wealthy to create opportunity for the middle class. on the republican side the romney numbers are interesting and his folks are encouraged by all the polls that show that people want him to run and he's doing well. the chris christie number is interesting. one thing i picked up last week in san diego is there's a lot of skepticism about chris christie and whether he's not the temperament and other things to be the nominee. there are a lot of republicans don't want him to run is fascinating. he's a stronger candidate, i think, than people think of him being right now. romney and bush in the race certainly does complicate things for him. >> it really complicates things. matt lewis, you've been covering the mitt romney story.

[laughter] >> our lineup tonight -- the team and baiters scream. but more variation on the mitt romney seemed. everyone in the republican party is talking about the resurrection of willard. the problem is a lot of members of the gop are not saying the nicest things. romney is scheduled to address the gop in san diego, but the question is whether mitt romney is still on the rise or is he already losing altitude? >> history will record that today is the low point of this new romney campaign so far. sarah palin added her voice today i don't think governor romney will care about that. he's doing well with a lot of his core supporters but we are starting to hear voices creeping and say he had his chance. why would he be any better this time than last time? friday night, he comes and speaks to the rnc. >> there are officials being recorded with officials trying to be poli

the roots of our movement. >> let's go to mark halperin. fresh off of a walk on the beaches of san diego in his wing tips. mark? >> mark, let me take the counter argument and just ask you. so what? these are rich people who care about america and want to participate in the democracy. why does it matter if rich people who really in some cases don't need anything from government, what does it matter if they're contribute some of their money to increase political dialogue? >> i don't fault them at all, mark. i think if you have money and you have issues you feel strongly about, you should make your voice known. what we believe we think we need to do is create a system where through small donor donations, through tax credit tax voucher, democracy vouchers that small dollar donors have as much say in the process so the candidates spend their time talking to small dollar donors as much as the sheldon aiddlesons of the world. >> didn't president obama do that? >> he did but it's changed a lot since then. what you see happening is rollbacks to the d

with all due respect mark halperin and john heilemann. >> going back two-and-a-half months ago charlie and the president coming off the midterm was eith)sñ liked enough in washington nor respected enough in washington to get anything done. the thought then was if you're going to get anything done you have to capitulate through republicans. mostly lie by luck and design the president comes into tonight or out of tonight with an improved economy, higher approval rating, some executive action that showed forward momentum that's let led to some extent to his higher approval rate and the agenda with the people significantly more popular whether the republican senate is offering or republican candidates are offering. i thought some of the things he said tonight would not improve his relationship with republicans by any means. but he's more powerful he's got more political capital tonight than two and-a-half months ago by a lot. that could lead i think i'm more optimistic than some, that could lead to republicans doing business with him in these
