mark kelly joins us live here in san francisco where it's too soon to tell if thanksgiving day shopping is such a good idea. mark. >> reporter: it's not what we expected. i'm live at the gap store on market street in san francisco. several bay area stores opened early today on thanksgiving, just to cash in early on the black friday rush. here's what the scene was like at gap on market street at 11 a.m. when they opened up. they had some customers but it can't compare to the rush and all that stampeding that typically comes with black friday. today's thanksgiving shopping was actually quite tame in comparison. here's earlier this morning, we were at the old navy in dublin expecting a line waiting for the doors to open at 9:00. and not a soul. we talked to some today who say stores should not open on thanksgiving. >> we are just noticing the gap is open. that's unreal. a day off would be good for everybody. better for everybody. >> i used to be a huge black friday shopper, midnight i'm good with that. but 5 p.m.? that's bad. >> reporter: whether you think it's sad or not, the fact is it's

mark kelly is live in oakland. the curfew is intended to help protect teens as well. >> reporter: it is. the oakland city council public safety committee is going to take a look at that tonight. let's keep in mind, a curfew law has been attempted here in oakland in the past but it has failed. still, here's the proposal on the table. anyone under the age of 18 must be off the street between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. that's every single day. and between 8:30:00 a.m. and 1:30:00 p.m. on school days. city council man has been advocating a cur view here. juvenile violence has gone too far. 600 oakland robberies has involved a juvenile as a suspect. that said, a curfew has been tried before, and it's been nothing but controversial. >> get them off the street because they're not going to solve their chemistry exam being out at midnight, hanging out on fruit veil. >> there's a disproportion of kids of color who are on curfew. >> reporter: now, critics say the curfew idea leads to racial profiling and keeps officers from fig

our mark kelly right outside with the district attorney's response with the demands for criminal charges against the deputy who shot that teen. mark. >> reporter: frank, for hours, people have been meeting inside that board of supervisors room. this is the first public meeting since the deputy shot and killed 13-year-old andy lopez and it comes at a time when the sonoma county d.a. here is facing mounting pressure from the public to bring murder charges on that deputy. standing room only, many interested in what their community leaders have to say about the killing of 13-year- old andy lopez. feelings of outrage, feelings of grief. >> i can't imagine losing a child and certainly not imagine losing a child in this particular way. >> as a mother, i want to wrap my arms around the lopez family and tell you how -- [ pause ] >> -- sorry. >> reporter: when sonoma county sheriff deputy eric gelhaus erick gelhaus shot and killed andy lopez, the public fired back with peaceful public protests and memorials. the deputy says lopez aimed the gun in his direction. the gun in the end was just a toy. n

mark kelly shows us how it works. mark? >> reporter: well, liz, for a good chunk of the day today, it's just been cloudy and wet just like this. usually that's bad news for airports but today, sfo used this weather as its first opportunity to test the new landing protocol in this wet weather, something they call casper. among bay area airports, sfo is notorious for delayed flights when the weather is wet and cloudy. the airport admits bad weather can cut the number of planes landing in half from 60 an hour to a measly 30. but a new procedure for landing planes hopes to improve that. it's nicknamed casper. >> it stands for closely spaced parallel runways. it's a new faa procedure that applies to sfo and a few other airports around the country. >> reporter: airports like boston and seattle. here's how cspr works. on bright sunny days planes can land at sfo side by side touching down on two different runways no problem. but when bad weather would strike, this kind of landing wasn't allowed. planes could only land in a single f

in san francisco, mark kelly, kpix 5. >> while some people shop for holiday gifts others drop by grocery stores getting the last- minute things for their thanksgiving dinner. a lot of people we spoke with today said they are just trying to avoid the hassle of cooking this year. they were picking up the premade meals. >> it's cooked. you have to heat it up for two hours. >> picking up the turkey, already ordered it. everything is cooked you take it home and heat it up. >> easier than spending the day and night in the kitchen. >>> our ryan takeo shows us how hundreds of volunteers spent their holiday helping those in need. >> reporter: you thought you had to cook a big feast. glide needed 500 volunteers to feed 5,000. ramon silvestri and his family drove from sacramento to help. >> i almost became homeless so it was tough. for me, i'm able to get out of that situation, i never forget these people. >> reporter: for him, peeling carrots reveals emotions of the struggles we hit. >> we are in that situation, i know how that feels being there and for me it means so much to even provide a simple

mark kelly joins us live tonight from where it all started. mark, what happened and where was the driver? >> no passengers were injured in any of this. in fact, when the train went off without the driver, it was the passengers who saved the day. the wild ride started around 10:20 wednesday morning with about three dozen passengers on board. according to the mta, it started when the train doors at the castro station would not shut. the driver hopped out of the booth to check the problem but the mta director says the driver forgot to do one very important thing. >> there is no evidence at this point that the emergency brake was used in the train. >> reporter: his team is now evaluating the computer system to verify not pulling the emergency brake was the single error the driver made. fortunately passengers thought quickly pulling the emergency brake in the train forcing it to stop and help to arrive. >> i need to really express my appreciation to the passengers on that train for staying put and allowing us to get them help and move the train alon

kpix 5's mark kelly on the questions over bart's priorities. >> reporter: for four hours, state legislators testimony from bart unions and management. the goal, understand why on october 19th, bart staff christopher sheppard and contractor larry daniels died hit by a bart train in walnut creek. the unions points the finger at bart's culture saying trains running on time not safety is the top priority for management. >> we want safety to be addressed and that was one of our sticking points. >> safety has always been our top priority. >> reporter: bart workers shared personal stories of dangerous working conditions on the job including physical assaults. >> but these rules are only really enforced after something goes wrong. >> reporter: and last months, something went fatally wrong. sheppard and daniels were working under a bart process called the "simple approval" practice where workers are responsible for their own safety. since the accident, bart has eliminated the practice for the time being replacing it with a work order practice that management says is time- consuming and costly. >> is

kpix 5 reporter mark kelly joins us live with more on the big makeover. good morning. >> good morning, frank. coit tower closed today. it's going to stay closed for the next five months in order to get a face-lift. it's definitely an iconic landmark here in the city with a long history that staff hope to preserve. >>> reporter: of all the buildings on the san francisco skyline, coit tower stands high and proud and it should. it has a very interesting history. >> it's living history. it's one of those few structures that's still standing in the same way it was intended when it was built. >> reporter: when she died, lily hitchcock coit donated a third of her state to beautify san francisco. city leaders debated what to do with the $100,000. >> in fact, originally, the city fathers tried to build a road with her $100,000. but her friends, luckily, and others said, well, i think she wanted something different and unique. >> reporter: in 1933, they settled on coit tower. but after 80 years of wear and tear, this landmark needs some work. through the next five

mark kelly shows us how it works and what it means for travelers. >> reporter: a good part of the day today here at sfo it was just cloudy and wet. very bad news for an airport but sfo used as an opportunity to launch its new landing protocol for the first time in wet weather like this and they call it cspr. among bay area airports, sfo is notorious for delayed flights when the weather is wet and cloudy. the airport admits, bad weather can cut the number of planes landing in half from 60 to 30 an hour but a new procedure for landing planes hopes to improve that. it's knicks named cspr. >> stands for closely spaced parallel runways a new procedure that applies to sfo and a few other airports around the country. >> reporter: airports like boston and seattle. these hour cspr works. on bright sunny days, planes can land at sfo side by side touching down on two different runways no problem. but when bad weather would strike this kind of landing wasn't allowed, planes could only land in a single file line leading to long delays for passengers. cspr changes that allowing planes in bad weathe

mark kelly spoke with one bay area woman who is afraid for her family members in the philippines, but is doing everything she can to help provide relief from the other side of the world. >>reporter: they watch typhoon updates from the philippines with a broken heart. >> it's dear to my heart because that's the province i was born. >>reporter: they're some of the 750,000 forced to plea their homes. they tried reaching out to family, but had no luck. >> the phone lines and communications are really bad. >>reporter: the typhoon is one of the strongest storms to hit these islands with winds topping some of america's most devastating hurricanes and wowing meteorologists. >> a cat 5 hurricane is 156 miles per hour. this is 195. it's gusting to 235. >>reporter: one glimmer of hope, moving off the island at a good clip, meaning less time to stick around and do more damage. just in october a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the islands, just weeks apart. >> the poor people are affected in the philippines because the structure of their houses are not as good as compared to effluent people. >>report

good morning i'm mark kelly. >> and i'm anne makovec. but first latest from los angeles airport. investigators are trying to piece together evidence from yesterday's deadly shooting that left a tsa agent dead and two others injured. police are looking into the background of the suspect in custody. edward lawrence joins us live from lax. are things getting back to normal there? >> they're trying to get back to normal here at the airport. terminal three is frozen in time. it's been frozen in time from the moment after the shooting. no one is allowed in. it's considered an active crime scene. the passengers who left their belongings there have to leave the belongings there until at least later on this afternoon. police are trying to figure out why this shooter hated the tsa so much that he targeted them. investigators worked through the night at lax's terminal three processing the crime scene. police say 23-year-old paul ciancia walked into the terminal, pulled out a semiautomatic rifle and started shooting. >> i just saw the gun. and i was just terrified. like everybody else was. w
