lawrence karnow is in the weather center, but first, we go to kpix 5's mark kelly in berkeley hills checking conditions in the east bay. mark. >> reporter: well, good morning, guys. this red flag warning, it was issued late last night. it's expected to last all the way through thursday morning. let me give you an idea of how dry these conditions are right now. here's some of the brush out here in the berkeley hills. these dry conditions coupled with this low moisture. fire crews tell us they have to be prepared for anything at this point. winds were so strong in berkeley monday evening that they toppled over this tree on benita way. at high elevations like this gusts to reach 40 miles per hour. so these conditions mean big changes for how firefighters have to do their jobs. they have to wear their lightweight fire gear and their regular gear. they have to have both of that on hand. >> the low fuel moisture, the low atmospheric moisture, and high winds, if somebody caught on fire up there it could spread rapidly involving many residences and buildings and be a much greater hazard to life and

in mass marks the unemployment rate is 7.3% and 275,000 are looking for work. in too many cities, lawrence, new bedford, all over massachusetts, there are cities with much higher unemployment rates and those unemployed workers in massachusetts and across this country, they're finding it extremely difficult to find a job in this market. according to the economic policy institute, for every one job opening, there are 3.1 unemployed workers. so two out of every three job seekers have no job that they can actually find. and yet we're going to pretend that there is a job for them to be able to find. there are many people who believe they're not working hard enough to find a job. well, let me tell you something. back in 2000, the unemployment rate in the united states of america went down to 3.8%, and guess what happened? people who were unemployed took those jobs. when unemployment goes down to 3.8%, when the government and the private sector is doing their job, people come to work. in massachusetts in 2000, unemployment went down to 2.8%. people weren't hiding under their beds. people weren't
