mark matthews is here to unravel a mixed message. >> we've got numbers. unemployment rate and number of jobs created. today both of those numbers came out for the month of january. and they are wildly die vergent. nationwide unemployment fell last month from 9.4% down to 9%. and employers barely added jobs just 36,000. a small fraction of the 150,000 that most economists expected. >> there is 36,000 jobs isn't enough to keep up with workers. >> abc news says numbers don't add up. it's because they rely on two different surveys. the number comes from a census survey of 60,000 homes. last month that survey shows an increase on 589,000 jobs. people saying they'd found employment. number of unemployed fell that. would account for the big drop in the figure but the new jobs number just 36,000 comes from north separate sur vaichl a jobs survey. every month a list of companies and government agencies reports how many people they employ. and there is small businesses don't report every month. and hiring at small businesses could account for a big part of the empl
