joining us now is nbc news deputy political director, mark murray. >> hey, martin. >> we can point toin indiana and another one in south carolina and a few more stories about bain closing firms and killing jobs. and yet romney is still the presumptive gop nominee. so is swift voting romney on his perceived strength, business and leadership, do you think that's a workable strategy? >> i'm glad you mentioned the swift voting. this actually does remind me of how republicans went after john kerry in 2004 when he became the nominee, in a way. john kerry's a very big strength going into that general election had to do with his military experience and service. and what republicans did in that swift vote campaign, and a lot of it people said was incredibly unfair, but it actually went to the heart of that, to undercut that military experience. so if mitt romney becomes the republican nominee, the one card he would like to show is the economy, his business experience. but if democrats can poke holes into that, that can actually end up serving the way the swift vote ads did. >> but you know tha

. >> mark murray is in washington. romney boated as newt gingrich sees it.urprise at the amount of money? >> it's not a surprise. we will see so much more money spent on ads. what has been interesting in the ad race in iowa is how almost unilaterally romney and particularly the pro romney super pack is hammering newt gingrich and without them being able to respond, when you show the numbers and restore our future spent some $3 million in ads, a really big sum for a state like iowa. the campaign spent just a million and when you admit romney's campaign, mostly on positive ads, you see a big disparity. someone like newt gingrich could survive with more money to spend, but given that disparity, you see why the numbers have gone down. >> others have noted a conservative republican complaining about the decision made by the supreme court that led to what mitt romney said people too. i want to play a moment from "hardball" where chris matthews hit this issue hard and brought up the point. let's listen. >> i think the current mess say disgrace. it debilitates polit

bit earlier, i spoke with nbc news deputy political director mark murray about the exit poll results and gingrich's commanding win with voters who said electability mat most. >> when you win as decisively as gingrich did last night, you win almost all kinds of groups. that's what we saw gingrich do, strength and normally be electability, we saw -- we saw gingrich win that group and even among republicans who said the economy is their top issue and that should also be mitt romney's wheel house. gingrich also won there. so -- a decisive across-the-board for gingrich last right he seemed to benefited tremendously from the two debate performances. 90% of the pom responded those debates were a factor decision and of those group gingrich won half, 50%. romney got 23%. why do you think the debate had such a big impact on this particular race? >> alex, the debates mattered. we had 17 debates so far in this election cycle. each one of them mattered. in a lot of respects, more important than the tv ads and they are more important than the endorsements. even breaking down those exit polls and f
