joining me now to break down the numbers, nbc news senior political editor mark murray. mark, let's start with the democrats. how worried should hillary clinton be about the numbers between her and sanders? >> she should be really worried, particularly if the iowa numbers hold true, kate. hillary clinton with a 3-point lead of likely voters in iowa. first contest is three beaks from now. you have here at 48%. bernie sanders at 45%. martin o'malley at 5%. the perception is that hillary clinton going to be and still may be the strongest democrat in the iowa contest. bernie sanders, of course, has an advantage in new hampshire. in our poll, bernie sanders with a 4-point ad also within the margin of error in the granite state but certainly the outcome to really start having democrats biting fingernails, not being happy would be bernie sanders winning iowa and new hampshire. hillary clinton shut out of the states and does have a buffer and fire walls in south carolina and other states with more diverse voters but this would not be good news. all that said, kate, maybe there is

'm envious of the people that live in states where they get to see all of these ads. i find them interesting. $139 million. i'm assuming a lot of those are not so positive, kind of negative ads. >> that's right. and we probably like it when we get to go to iowa and new hampshire for our brief stops. i'm sure if you lived there every day, you will tire of these ads. to put that $139 million spent in the 2016 contest so far, into perspective, at this same point in time in the 2012 contest, just $35 million had been spent. and it was just a republican race back then. but this is a tremendous amount of money. it's really the super pacs that are fueling all of it. jeb bush and his allies are outspending everyone else, nearly $50 million. marco rubio is in second place. in third, the hillary clinton campaign. but a tremendous amount of money spent on these ads and a lot of ads. >> if you had to single some out, have any struck you in recent days as particularly creative or effective? >> well

because now he has to cut some of the deals just to make the government function and keep it open. >> mark murrayed cruz released duelling negative ads today. trump's first attack ad of the 2016 campaign. it comes as rubio is scaling back his advertising in iowa to the tune of $500,000, according to a new piece in politico. i'm joined now by olivia sterns and also beth freeney here with me in the newsroom. olivia, ad spending, you've been tracking the numbers. >> yes, we got some new numbers here. what they show, marco rubio is the second biggest spender on the campaign, trailing only -- >> jeb bush. >> it's incredible. the two of them have spent about $91 million in advertising via their campaigns and outside groups. mr. bush and his allies have spent almost $59 million. and rubio, about $33 million. by comparison, this is what's incredible. donald trump and ted cruz, the two front-runners in the republican primary have spent just about $8 million on ads. that's obviously a ratio of more than 11-1. so the take-away from all this, kate, is that the big spending, even if it's from super pacs, just

nbc's senior political editor, mark murray, joins us now with more. , to some extent, the numbers haven't changed all that much, right? but in the details, you may see some movement. >> that's right, kate. and actually, you know, it's going to change so much, what ends up happening in iowa and new hampshire. and they're almost two different contests that are occurring right now. one, the national race, and you ended up putting out the national poll numbers, where hillary clinton and donald trump both have significant national leads. but then there are the races in iowa and new hampshire, where we're seeing some different contests. and on the democratic side, as you mentioned, the democratic race between hillary clinton and bernie sanders is neck and neck in iowa. bernie sanders actually has kind of a sizable lead in new hampshire. and on the republican side, donald trump has now had a lead in iowa in five out of the last six polls in the hawkeye state. but today's newest quinnipiac poll has donald trump with just a two-point lead over ted cruz. so, you

joining me live now, msnbc news senior editor mark murray. let's start with the democrats.obviously, it's tied into our network, msnbc. let's talk about it. what do we know here? >> well, what we know is that the clinton campaign has said they would be open to a debate that would happen in new hampshire, tamron, on february 4th. the debate would be co-sponsored with the new hampshire union leader. the sanders campaign, though, has said, despite that they've wanted more debates in the past, they've said, well, we don't want to upset the apple cart when it comes to the dnc and all the future sanctioned debates. so, it doesn't seem that they're on board. we're waiting to see what the next couple days hold, tamron, but that's the situation now. >> debbie wasserman schultz, the dnc chair, in her statement says "we have no plans to sanction any further debates before the upcoming first in the nation caucuses and primary, but we will reconvene with our campaigns after those two contests to review the schedule." if the candidates participate in an unsanctioned debate, they can be,

now let me bring in mark murray who's been closely tracking all the polling out of iowa. d afternoon, chris. >> with the beautiful dome of the state capitol behind you. let's take the lay of the land at least in terms of the polls. where does the race stand right now? >> you know, chris, we have two fascinating contests on both the democratic and republican side. this is my fourth iowa caucus cycle to cover. this is the first one where you have competitive contests both on the republican and democratic side. and the polling right now shows that donald trump for the most part has edged ahead of ted cruz in the republican race. in the democratic race most of the polling has hillary clinton with a very small lead, although within the margin of error. i think our nbc/wall street journal marist poll has hillary clinton up 3 points over bernie sanders and on the republican side donald trump over 7 on ted cruz. >> we always talk about the importance of turnout. we have already several times in this hour. talk to us about who that might favor and who it might hurt. what do we know
