joining me now from washington, nbc news senior political editor mark murray.ot of talk today about the stop trump effort and you wrote on first read this morning about how disjointed it seems. it's not like there's a phone number we can call to get ahold of the stop trump people. >> there doesn't seem to be a strategy or everyone a singular person to be able to run against donald trump right now. new arizona and we'll end up seeing tuesday what happens. the delegates in arizona are winner take all and it's possible that donald trump ends up winning arizona, taking the nearly 60 delegates and a winner take all situation and getting proportionally delegates from the other state participating on tuesday, that's u.s. utah. if both of those happen, donald trump widens his lead. you are right there are so many different efforts we've seen over the past 48 hours, republicans who feel like they need to stop donald trump but we are now more than halfway through the primary season and republicans yet haven't been able to identify and solidify around one single strategy

i want to bring in nbc news senior political editor mark murray. morning. >> good morning, jose. >> let's talk about the democratics. how do things look right now for hillary clinton and bernie sanders dm. >> when you look at the pledged delegates, awarded on how the contests break out, hillary clinton has more than a 200 pledged delegate lead over bernie sanders. that is likely to grow tonight, regardless of how the midwestern states like ohio, illinois, and missouri play out, given her very big leads in florida and in north carolina. and jose, when you add super delegates to the count, her lead over sanders is more than 600. with sanders and his supporters are hoping for is if they're able to sweep the midwesternitates, they have a lot of momentum ahead to the next seven contests over the next month which would allow him to chip away at hillary clinton's very big delegate lead. but as we kind of list right there, jose, the math is very daunting for bernie sanders. >> you know, even today, i still get asked a lot about what exactly is a superdeleg

nbc's mark murray is standing by. our senior political editor. mark, as we talk about this, and we've read some of the romney statements earlier about donald trump and trumpism, it's not a really strong, you know, indictment of either, when you think about what mitt romney is saying here, because he hates donald trump so much, he's willing to kind of bend to support ted cruz. i mean, it's the least of the evils? >> yeah, and thomas, you know, look, this ends up helping ted cruz in utah. and of course, it's possible that cruz doesn't even need this help, given the conservative nature of the electorate. but mitt romney is a beloved son of utah, such a big figure in the mormon church, and certainly mitt romney doing this and saying, hey, everybody, i'm going to vote for ted cruz, helps cruz be able to get maybe across that 50% threshold to win all of the delegates that are up for grabs in tuesday in utah. but i think, as you mentioned, it doesn't necessarily provide a lot of clarity on, if you really want to stop trump, how, noerl, you end up doing i

mark murray joins me now. and mark, let's talk about, as we mentioned, the cross over vote that seems to be the hot topic this morning in ohio, the same case in illinois. a lot of focus on crossover because it's an open primary. >> that's right, tamron. of course, illinois and you end up having illinois is an open primary as well as missouri. ohio is a little bit different than in michigan where people can show up and you can request a democratic or republican ballot. you end up becoming a democratic or republican registered voter. if you want to keep your unaffiliated independent status, you can't vote in the republican or democratic primary. so it's a little bf different than what we're seeing in illinois and missouri, and last week in michigan, but certainly it's not closed the same way that florida is. >> so the difference potentially would be, mark, in ohio, for example, those people asking for crossover ballot could be some of these reagan democrats as we have heard, who in the past supported the democrat

let's go to mark murray of our political unit. st night kind of taking us on a tour of the country, at least the remaining gop primary states, and with that in mind, who else can say what mitt romney just said? is there anyone else close to him in stature and does this do any good for his cause? >> yeah, brian, no one really other than maybe george w. bush and of course, we saw the former president bush weigh in on his brother's behalf. but what has been extraordinary about this entire election season is that you look at the very beginning when there weren't three establishment favorites on the republican side. you had jeb bush, he is no longer in the race. you had scott walker, he's no longer in the race. you had marco rubio who is sitting in a disappointing third in delegates. if you are establishment republicans you might feel there is no one else to go and be able to attack donald trump. so that is maybe the best way to understand mitt romney and his spooch today. there is no jeb bush or george w. bush who will weigh in. marco

. >> i want to bring in nbc news senior political eder mark murray. when we look at the math i just brought up, bernie sanders does need to capture 65% of the delegates to hit this number. realistically where things stand today, do you see that happening? >> erica, the math is very daunting. where tad was right in the interview you just had is that the ground is actually going to be more favorable to bernie sanders. although you're going to some western states on tuesday, the contest in idaho, in arizona, in utah, are much more favorable ground than we saw for bernie sanders in places like florida and north carolina. the problem for bernie sanders is that he needs not only just to win those states, but has to start winning them by 65% to 35% margins. 70% to 30% margins to be able to really chip in to the delegate lead that hillary clinton has, because unlike the republican contests where there are some states that are winner-take-all, the democratic contests are all proportional. if you win 52% to 48%, you basically come even on the delegates and aren

story lines, over these crucial 13 days is my partner in crime, our senior nbc political editor, mark murrayis is part of this, open, closed, half hope, all this stuff, this stuff matters. we saw this last night, oklahoma and arkansas, brad todd bringing this up, where trump struggled in places where they were closed primaries, where no independents could vote. walk me through this map, where that's going to be an advantage for the stop-trump movement and a disadvantage for trump. >> yeah, you know, ted cruz has some opportunities in the next two weeks. and particularly as we head into the louisiana primary, and it's not only just the open and close situation, it's also geography that's really helped ted cruz in this. but, yes, you end up getting to a caucus contest like in kansas, kansas looks a lot like you would end up seeing in minnesota, where marco rubio ended up winning. but what's really amazing to me, chuck, is that we've covered super tuesday every which way. 595 delegates were up for grabs on super tuesday. the next two weeks, you're going to have almost 700 delegates -- >> let's

joining me now with more is senior political editor for nbc news, mark murray.. >> good morning, jose. >> let's talk a little bit about that math, the delegate math. how does it add up here? >> let's start where the delegate situation is right now. jose, right now, donald trump has an 88-delegate lead over his closest competition, ted cruz. it's donald trump, 325. ted cruz, 237. marco rubio, 117. so that's where it stands right now. and then, of course, we're going to be headed into contests over the next week. we have contests on saturday and sunday. as well as on tuesday. and that also is going to change. basically, if you assume that donald trump keeps on winning the same proportion that he has over the last 15 contests, that then changes the numbers where donald trump has 130 delegate lead over ted cruz. you have trump at 485, ted cruz at 355, and then marco rubio at 174. >> mark, let's talk about the numbers because, you know, marco rubio has in the past, for example, been the underdog in many races. and he ends up winning. but as far as florida is concerne

murray and senior contribute, matthew lewis and "meet the press" moderator david gregory. >> a little never the night trump on twitter said, yep, we agree with that and he knocks out mark co-rubio. so he continues to be in this demanding decision. no one else has really consolidated everywhere else, so he's in a very strong position. he's not done yet. kasich is still fighting. and the fact that david has a new day means that anti-trump vote is still divided between him and cruz. i think that's ultimately to trump's benefit and so do a lot of conservatives who worry about kasich's mini surge in his home state. >> you're hearing a lot of talk about unity from different corners of the party. we haven't seen it that quickly after elections. matt, let's take a listen to donald trump as he talked about ryan and mcconnell and what the theme is now. >> paul ryan called me the other day, tremendous call. i spoke with mitch mcconnell today. we had great conversation. the fact is we have to bring our party together. we have to bring it together. >> the unity guy. matt lewis, do you believe that there is now a coalescing around trump? are you seeing indications of that? >> no, not really.
