with us throughout the hour, mark murray, in washington. all, looking at the exit polls and your data, what are your biggest takeaways from both of these candidates, the presumptive candidates in both parties, what they have to do? how has everything changed since we saw the disappointment for nikki haley in virginia, in colorado, especially where, not being able to build any kind of strength against donald trump? >> yeah. i mean, if you look at last night -- everybody expected it was going to be a big night for trump. haley did manage to eek out a win in vermont. she was hoping some of the states you mentioned, especially virginia, to be doing better than 34.9% right there. minnesota was one that on paper had a lot of demographic opportunity. she hasn't cracked 30%. colorado, this one surprised me. the scope of it. 33% of the vote. we talked about haley doing well with college educated suburbanites. no state in the country has a higher share of its white adult population with at least a four-year degree than colorado. even in those suburbs

also joining us, symone sanders townsend, and mark murray, nbc news senior political editor.thank you all for joining us. so vaughn, haley kicked off her campaign 385 days ago. what are you anticipating as we wait for her remarks to begin? >> reporter: right, more than a year ago nikki haley has been running this campaign against donald trump. donald trump much to his chagrin, had noted multiple times that she had once promised that she would never challenge him, but like others including his own former vice president mike pence, florida governor ron desantis, south carolina senator tim scott, and others, they all jumped into the race thinking that they could knock off the former president. nikki haley, the last one standing. and with the results that came in last night in which she only pulled off a victory in the state of utah, losing in 15 other states, this was a clear message send by the republican electorate, that the republican electorate and the united states of america wants donald trump to be their nominee, despite four criminal indictments, despite having been foun

. >>> let's turn to mark murray. >> hi. >> it's super tuesday.y we all love until the big election day. what are you looking for? what do you think nikki haley is looking for to stay in the race? what's her rationale? >> look at the best case scenario. steve did a great job. say she does well in the northern virginia suburbs where there are a lot of college-educated, moderate, independent voters. she maximizes, wins some congressional districts there, she does well in the proportion proportional math whether it co -- when it comes to north carolina. our math shows her best case scenario, donald trump still wins 80% of tonight's 865 delegates. donald trump's best night, he gets 90%. even if nikki haley does well, overperforms, donald trump is probably going to have a substantial delegate lead as we head into the next contests. >> if he gets 90 or 90 plus, where he goes over the top, or does it require next week? >> going over the top is 1,215. that's the magic number. that's not going to happen tonight. after tonight, we will only get through 47%

joining us nbc news senior political editor mark murray. how did that happen, mark?n, is a really well-known name given his days playing baseball with the los angeles dodgers. but the other reason, and maybe even more crucial, is the fact that adam schiff's campaign ended up spending millions hear dollars on tv ads actually boosting garvey's name to probably a lot of republicans who are going to be voting in that presidential primary anyway. and the ads ended up having words that steve garvey voted for donald trump twice, steve garvey is very conservative, with kind of the overt message that schiff and his campaign were trying to signal, hey, republicans, unite around steve garvey. vote for him when you steve garvey. vote for him when you're casting your ballot. and that seems to have worked for both garvey and for adam schiff. >> katie porter none too leases please -- too pleased. will there be blow back? >> yeah. she finished in third place, getting 13%, 14% of the votes so far, she said hey with a democrat, adam schiff, and republican, steve garvey, in the race, t

mark murray, take us two it.hree guys in the race, and how integral and important this is. all of that being said, what are the polls looking like? >> yeah, and so the polling right now, yasmin is that we haven't seen a lot of good high quality polling that meets nbc news's standards. the stuff that's out there, as well as the perception of the race is that this is a very close and competitive contest, particularly between dolan right now as henry was mentioning as well as moreno. in a lot of ways, yasmin, seeing this as a replay of what we ended up seeing in 2022's republican senate primary, where j.d. vance ended up emerging in a three-way contest as that republican party's nominee. he ended up getting the endorsement from donald trump, but notably, he only ended up winning 32% of the vote that time around. and showing you how close things can end up being. you might only need to have 32 to 35% of the vote to win in the three-way race right now. having donald trump's endorsement has benefitted a lot of republic

headquarters and daniel island, south carolina, nbc news correspondent vaughn hillyard joins us, and mark murray and live from washington nbc news capitol hill correspondent julie tsirkin. ali, what have you heard from the haley campaign about what went into the decision to drop out today? >> reporter: i keep hearing this phrase about righteous fights and the idea this was a just campaign on the right side of the republican party's history right now. essentially the idea that nikki haley was offering the party something that wasn't trump and now this dropout is the acceptance of the fact that the party said no thank you, we're good with what we had. i do think that you know i often think about these things in the larger arc of political history, especially as it portends to women and executive office. and i think it is really important for us to look at the fact that as andrea mentioned, haley made history in her bid, not just for being the only woman who ran in this primary, but also being the first republican woman to ever win any republican primaries ever. she didn't just do that once in d.c.

nbc's political editor mark murray is with me from d.c., and look who's here from d.c. chuck todd >> lay it out for us. why are these six weeks -- i was just talking about everything's upended, the important six weeks are supposed to be september, october, right? >> sure. the reason i point it out here, if you look at the last two incumbents, won re-election, george w. bush, barack obama. right after their opponents were coronated, they had a resource problem, right? they didn't have as much cash. the incumbent did. this is when george w. bush and team framed, questioned kerry's war record, and he didn't have the resources to fight back in time. mitt romney, this was the period of time they turned mitt romney's bain capital experience into a liability, and romney didn't respond. he was low on cash. this six-week period, biden has this advantage right now. he's going to press this financial advantage. we're going to start to see the first hits on trump, what works, what is their framing -- what is their theory of the case. we're going to learn a lot. if he wins reelectio
