as mark potter reports, the father and military man is being hailed a hero for what did he and it wasght on camera. >> reporter: on leave with his family in sarasota, florida, staff sergeant eddie peebles had no reason to respect that while out with his kids, his battlefield skills would be tested and recorded on a security camera. visiting a bank two of his boys, he came face to face with a man with a gun who police say was there to commit robbery. peebles can be seen in the background, shielding his children from harm. >> he's pointing a weapon right at me. i don't care. i'm trying to get my children out of his line of fire. >> reporter: but the gunman looming, peebles tells his kids to get under the seats and moves chairs in front of them for more protection. soon, peebles said, the gunman turned and threatened one of his boys. >> he can see my son. my son is looking at him. he points the gun and he said, if anyone does anything, the kiddie is going to get it. >> reporter: police identified the robber as 34-year-old matthew rogers and say he walked out of the bank with ten of thous

nbc's mark potter reports. >> reporter: in the wrongful death suit against the football program, it'sn an uncomfortable spotlight. in march, 2008, 19-year-old player eric plancher collapsed and died. the medical examiner said he died from sickle cell that can be aggravated by extreme heat and exercise. during the civil trial in orlando, a cardiologist agreed with that ruling. >> he died of a complications of sickle cell trait. >> reporter: his family argues the athletic association knew from tests he had the sickle cell condition, but didn't warn or protect him. >> eric plancher had no idea he had sickle cell trait. >> reporter: she can't remember if she notified plancher of his condition. plaintiffs also claim on the day of the workout they describe as grueling ucf football coach shouted obscenities when he faltered and couldn't complete the exercises. testifying on video a former teammate described plancher's collapse. >> he was just laying there limp like nothing and that's when i feel they realized something was really wrong with him. >> reporter: sickle cell trait was not the cau

we get the story from mark potter. >> reporter: during an annual event called urban beach week which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to south beach, celebration turned to terror when shots rang out. >> fire. >> reporter: police say the incident began at 4:00 a.m. on memorial day when a driver who refused to stop for police nearly struck several officers. >> there were multiple attempts to hurt the police officers. or pedestrians. >> reporter: as the car drove away, shots were fired and the car stops. witnesses say they weren't sure if the shots came from the car or from the officers. for the next minute, the police surrounded the vehicles and then for reasons still unexplained, opened up with a hail of bullets. the 22-year-old driver was killed, and also wounded were four bystanders, including tourist cedric parker who insists he was shot by police. a cell phone video shows a man being confronted by an officer, and then also shows the officer confronting the man when he sees him. another reporter said that an officer also seized one of their cameras. the police is in the midd

mark potter has more from oklahoma city. mark, good morning. >> good morning, natalie.macy where the shooting took place. the question is was it self-defense or self-defense that went too far? the official verdict is in but it's controversial. >> the defendant is guilty of the crime of murder in the first-degree. >> reporter: from the verdict it was clear the jury didn't buy jerome's claim he acted solely in self-defense and recommended a harsh set. >> punishment is imprisonment for life. >> reporter: the pharmacist was found guilty of murdering 16-year-old antoine parker during a botcheded robbery in 2009. the incident caught on security cameras. authorities say the video shows 16-year-old parker and a 14-year-old accomplice entering the drugstore wearing masks. the 14 yeerl points a gun at two female employees who run to the back of the store. prosecutors say the pharmacist then fires his own weapon, shooting parker in the head. the other teen with the gun flees the store and the pharmacist chases him outside. when he returns, he walks over parker who was unconscious
