mark: rubio is now the front runner for many in the establishment. injured in some of his most vulnerable moments. let us start with ted cruz. he was thinking of rubio as he held forth on immigration. : if we join the democrats as the party of amnesty, we will lose. i understand that when the mainstream media covers immigration, it doesn't often seen as an economic issue. americans, is a very personal economic issue. mark: the two biggest questions are how vulnerable is rubio? and how will we defend himself? on immigration, he was taken from all sides. will say he once was for copperheads reform. is honorable. he has the problem that you just identified. he has been on every side of the issue. he pleases no one. no one is really ready to defend them. he doesn't have a real explanation for how we went from where he was to where he is now. it puts him at a great vulnerability with the republican base. mark: rubio has a lot of political skill. when they are attacked, they don't just play defense. a play offense. -- they play offense. i think rubio does h

so when it comes to bush versus rubio, rubio versus the world, what are your thoughts? markpre-paleo jeb makes me never want to eat pizza again. bush was hurt by having his brother in his head, and now he has rubio in his head. that video is devastating. i think jeb bush tonight, he just has to show people why he would be a great president. as for rubio, he is the best political talent on the stage. if he has another good debate, he will solidify his hold. campbell: what is frustrating about the potential for bush to go after rubio is that a lot of people who supported bush from the beginning were not with him because he was a bush, but they knew he was smart about policy issues and they believed he would be a good president. this should be the perfect opportunity. mark: the thing about both camps is they are supremely confident. the bush camp is confident that as rubio gets scrutiny, he will come down. bush, at a minimum, has to get people thinking he can be a momentum candidate before iowa. campbell: i wonder if these attacks we keep hearing about are really going to come.

he didn't attack mark rubio. super pac is going after him for opposing abortion too vigorously. you are too conservative, mark rubio. but he did not do that. it is hard to see how this advan advances his cause. i heard some saying it did. perhaps. but it is hard to see it. >> martha: let's look a little at ted cruz from last night. >> i will say for those of us who believe people ought to come to this country legally and they should face the law we are tired of being called it is anti-immigrant. it is offensive. >> martha: how did that do for him? >> cruz had a good night and that was a great answer. he gets to something that drives me crazy. when people ask me my preferred immigration policy my answer is to have one. whatever the policy is stick to it and enforce it. one thing that drives me crazy about the republican party is the fact the republicans are on the other side is infuriating. just because we want to enforce the law doesn't mean we don't like immigrants. >> cruz is an immigrant. he was born in canada

rubio on another committee. they are getting briefings. mark people in iowa and new hampshire looking at that and sing, they are on the committee, that's impressive? the credential. it's the expertise. they are not saying marco rubio is the chairman of the western hemisphere senate foreign relations committee, therefore he is ready. but when you go look at his back theserth -- he is on platforms where he has had to weigh in. you do get the impression that this is a guy in command of facts and knowledge. i think bush, christie, and john kasich have other advantages. more bush and christie than john kasich. they just have the executive in them.ness profile to at the end of the day, i think will have anz advantage over the governors. i think them demonstrating real expertise, marinating these issues for a wild, they have been in the middle of these foreign policy fights with president obama. they had to vote whether to send troops to syria. they had to take real responsibility. they had to vote on what to do with the intelligence and national secu

john: how real is marco rubio's rise? markrco rubio can survive the betting that is coming, and he has the establishment, people who are not wedded to bush, and he has a great campaign. he is great with people and he is, right now, on everybody's list of possible nominees. john: you can't make too much about these endorsements, but in the last few days, paul singer, and i don't think there is anyone who is as important with any republican donors than him, who signed with rubio, and cory gardner today, a freshman senator, but a new voice in the party, those are big bolsters for rubio. mark: as far as we know, marco rubio has skyrocketed. sort of how carly fiorina did after her good debate, but he has to keep it going. john: look, there is still the question we keep raising again and again, what state will rubio win early on? that is indicative of anything else, if other polls match, means he could be in a good place. mark: there is a new force in the party for sure. if you follow politics, you know that any candidate is legally

rubio, you have to win that. does that affect the amount of dollars you have early on? markhe republican side, ted cruz is more focused on iowa than new hampshire. chris christie is focused on .ore -- on new hampshire but they continue to visit the other states. is it smart for them to keep hedging their bets? think since 1988, what we have seen in both parties, iowa and new hampshire tend to be one campaign. if you are in iowa, you will get andred in the boston market the new hampshire markets. new hampshire, you will get covered in iowa. it is inevitable. you have to think of that as one campaign. --oneve to make sure thing about the early timing, back in 1988, when did gephardt one in 1988, we went on the week before christmas in iowa on television. we were the only ones on by ourselves. you have to think out-of-the-box . yout the super tuesday, have to think out-of-the-box about what markets you will target and where you will play. we have seen people do that cleverly in the past and we have seen people bungle it. mark: should chris christie keep going to iowa or focus o

i have not talked to or seen him since he became governor but i would say just as mark rubio has the best skill set i would argue that casich is probably the most qualified person running in either party. 18 years as a member of the house back when it was a functioning institution. the house armed service committee member the entire time he is there checking that national security box. governor of ohio. that is a big deal. then you think it is ohio. no republican ever won the presidency without winning ohio. and if you look at ideaological where he is, i think of this as a bell curve, where the bell curve is the 40-45 yardline on the right side because the country is a little more conservative than liberal, and kasich is on the 40 yardline. in the same zone as bush and rubio. so it is not optimal to win the election but it is good place to be. but he has one shortcoming and that is, and again i alluded to and said i have adhd which is no surprise to the people that work with me, that adderall or ritilin would change his life. you have never seen a person that is as successful as him

he would not be the last, either, i would wager, so how vulnerable do you think rubio is on that issue? markwe discussed shooting and missing, rubio can say at a -- say to the base that this is all a liberal attack. many people around jeb bush and donald trump think in the end, rubio is going to have to run the gauntlet on this issue at least one more time and there will be a deeper dive into personal finances. it will depend on how you can handle it. bill clinton showed you can survive anything if you handle it well. john: i'm not sure marco rubio is yet in the bill clinton category. mike murphy, who has done more negative ads than any strategist or advertising maker we know you , know he's got whatever it is on marco rubio mike murphy has , got it. he has not wanted to go negative so far at this early stage, but i cannot believe there will not be a lot of heavyweight negative advertising coming out of right to rise directly on this issue. mark: i will predict based on the past of other candidates he is going to face, if he continues to rise, some issue that none of us have ever heard of in

i think it's possible rubio could lead in one of those states. mark: which one? new hampshire. john: i think it's possible but not likely. january is going to be a month -- i'm speaking to you now. january is a month we could see a lot of movement in poland. we get through the holiday season and get into january. the month of january leading into iowa and new hampshire, that month can see a lot of tumbled. the question i have for j-mart is this one, part of the rubio scenario -- coming out of that last debate, there were a lot of people, including this reporter, who wrote about the perception that jeb bush dead, done, finished. have you seen any signs since the cnbc debate in boulder that makes you think there is a pulse or anything like a pulse that could suggest a possible or imminent comeback? i spent time with him last week in new hampshire, and the answer to that question depends upon whether or not investment in new hampshire still matters. not to plug my story for second time, but it partially depends on whether or not he can work his tail off in new hamps

mark, you had the marco rubio story that hugh just brought up and it does go to the -- the head scratcher was it was like a non-issue but what took him so long. >> there's a few things that took them so long. rubio in 2010, first batch of his credit cards got released, credit card statements to the republican party of florida were released on the behest of then-governor charlie crist running against him in the senate and they made the calculation that look, these are private statements and i'm just going to take the hit. years later they had the luxury of knowing that when he runs for president they'll have time to analyze his other statements and when they analyze those statements and put them together and pull the bank statements they realized, oh, my god, there's not much here. there's only $65,000 in spending over two years as the head of the florida house campaigns which is not a lot of money. so they made the calculation that we'll hold off until the appropriate time and let the donald trumps of the world say this is going to be a disaster. >> it was a setup. i think it was a setup.

same thing can happen to mark row rubio. this is a very good spin and smart politics. but there are serious questions of how he spent party money in florida. and how he handled his personal finances and blurring between his permanent and political. he has a sugar daddy who put him and his wife on the payroll. and he critized the clintons for that. that will be relitigated and put in a harsher spotlight. and don't talk about honesty and say those issues are discredited, because they have not. >> jeb bush critized marco rubio not directly. but saying he is the gop's obama. we heard a line used. the gop's clinton. and is that a bigger liability. >> it is see far from it being wheat water. you can expect white water scrutiny. but he has to answer additional questions. and i think i was embedded in his campaign. you are right it was not national level scrutiny. it was litigate asked relitigated because he was running against the republican incumbent governor. >> we interviewed him on "happening now" and we asked about his finance. it was enough of an issue in florida. it se
