joining me now, the board of education, mark sanchez. mark, how are you? thanks for joining us. >> i'm good. how are you doing? >> good. thank you. i know it's been a long, tough debate for your district. tell me what was the deciding factor to go distance learning? >> ve seen throughout the it is not optimal. the science informs us in san francisco, even if we wanted to go back to in-person learning, we wouldn't be able to because of the health department's order. so we are looking at the science. and we are also looking at distance learning. >> sorry. i had laptop on. so i was hearing you. but i want to ask, you though. i know you had considered a hybrid model, right? where you'd have cohort groups so everybody didn't have to be on campus, at the same time. ultimately, why did you reject that? is there just not enough space? >> no. just - the science shows us that we cannot. there is still a health department order not to go back to school. so we couldn't, even if we wanted to. even if all our families and teachers wanted to, we couldn't. so we are rampi

the board president mark sanchez said he would like to see online learning be a version of two hours of live instruction along with assignments posted online. but again, they're trying to figure out how this is all going to play out when the semester starts august 17. we should know more in the next couple of weeks. back to you guys. >> all right. thank you. here's a look at the latest coronavirus numbers. there have been more than 3.4 million cases in the united states. this according to data supplied by john hopkins university. we mentioned california recording a record number of new cases. we're now at a total of 347,634 cases. in the bay area's nine counties, over 37,000 cases. we should point out this includes patients who have recovered but testing results appear to be really slowing down. it can take days, up to a week to get results and that's a best case scenario. in many cities, there are so many back lags at labs. we talked to two doctors who said without a national testing strategy, it will be very difficult to fix a very problematic delay. >> about an hour after opening,
