mark sayre reports >>> reporter: with the warm temperatures, the beaches of santa cruz are packed. but could there be danger lurking? swimmers and surfers at four pop santa cruz beaches were met by this sign over the weekend warning of great white shark sightings. for a short time, the city recommended that people stay out of the water but most took those warnings in stride. >> you're surfing, you hear about the shark warning. what do you think? >> not much. i know that the sharks attack people. >> you're probably going to have a greater chance of hurting yourself or being in an accident getting to the beach than having that shark find you. >> reporter: the santa cruz fire department said it was a credible sighting. both a lifeguard and swimmer saw it with its tail thrashing and head above the water just offshore from this beach. have you seen a shark while you're in the water? >> i have. >> reporter: cole sandman says he feels safe surfing in santa cruz but will never forget surfing in the open ocean where he saw a shark up close. >> i was pretty nervous. nothing you can do about

mark sayre is live at the highway 17 on-ramp in los gatos. mark, how is it looking out there. >> reporter: well, it's been a busy weekend for sure and the highway signs are already up warning drivers that this on- ramp will be closed in the weeks ahead. for residents they hope that this change will really stop the downtown traffic jams during the busy beach weekends. looking at highway 17 southbound, you would think it is the middle of the weekday rush hour. on some weekends, like this one the traffic towards santa cruz and the beach is actually far worse than what regular commuters face. so drivers try to cut over and drive through los gatos to save time and that's got residents fuming. >> you can't back out of your driveway because it's gridlock and if you go anywhere even only a couple of miles it's an hour to get home. it's ridiculous so you walk. >> reporter: to combat the cut- through problem the town painted logos on the middle of north santa cruz avenue trying to get drivers to detour back on to highway 17 before driving all the way t
