joining me now is mark sebastian, director of trading and investment at swan welker advisor's.ake of the vix position? does this mean people expect a fall or they are being more cautious? >> they are definitely being more cautious. yesterday, we are down 12 points. the vix gains 1.6 points. today we are back up 11 and begin away less than half of that on the vix. we are near all-time highs. the vix is a full two points higher. when we see the market rally and volatility rally with it, that is almost always a sign of a near-term top. the way i am looking at the market right now, we may test that all-time high at 1848. i don't think we are going to break it. i think there is something very quickly coming up that is going to amount to some sort of drop. maybe that 100 day moving average that we had a couple of weeks ago. >> so you don't recommend selling volatility here. you want to buy. >> if i was looking at the market, the types of trades i like right now are things like one by two call spreads, things where i am taking in credit but i am not short on the downside. i would not

trader mark sebastian of swan wealth advisors joins us now. i want to talk about that turn for the worse that happened in the stock market yesterday on comments from the fed. will we see follow through today mark? >>i think so. we saw a huge move in the vix along with the s&p 500 selloff. when the vix makes a big move relative to the s&p it almost always points toward some continued weakness. i would be steering clear of the broad market indexes right now. i'd be waiting until we hit that 100 day moving average again that the market seems to really like bouncing off of. >>tesla shares soared off of earnings last night. but will that continue today? the stock was climbing some 16% plus. >>huge move. the market was expecting about a 10% move. it moved way more than that. it crushed earnings. those environmental credits are really working out well for them right now. in the near term it doesn't look like it's going higher but long term who knows? this is looking very reminiscent of an apple in 2011. i'd be watching out for some sort of top in thi

mark sebastian of swan wealth advisors joins us now for trader talk. good morning. the s&p 500 broke through 1745 yesterday. are we in technical trouble here? >>it was a real interesting day. we broke the 100 day moving average on monday. that's going to be a technical hurdle if we're gonna rally back. one key thing that changed yesterday was the vix. it absolutely got thwacked even though the market didn't rally which to me says maybe traders are less worried than the general public realizes. >>critical question hereyou're a smart guy, you've been trading in this market a long timehow does one hedge their portfolio? what can the average investor do from all these big dips that we're seeing in the market now? >>looking at where the vix is relative to how big some of these moves have been, i think collaring strategies and/or some sort of protective put makes a lot of sense. if someone is sitting on a large capital gain, an alternative way to take care of that would be to sell their portfolio and buy calls. that way, they have to pay the capital gains but they are not

all of it linked to that testimony. ,or more on the market reaction i want to bring in mark sebastianf trading and investments at swan wealth advisors. today he happens to be in new york. he is here live and in person. i was talking about this earlier. reallyction today represents a shift in sentiment. especially when you look at the reaction to the jobs report on friday and the fact that it was worse than estimated, people were concerned -- does that mean a change in the tapering schedule? today, the fact that it is staying the course is somehow a good thing. >> based on that testimony, i would have been less surprised if you told me the s&p was down $20 rather than up $20. however, as i look at this snapback rally we have had off the bottom, i see signs of wearing. treasuries have stabilized. the s&p is moving quickly. rallies with a quick snapback ,ollowed by a slow grind higher half a percent, three quarters of a percent, healthy. rallies where we get these 1%, 1.5%, huge moves, are never as a sign of a healthy market. >> that is now four days up for the s&p. the index gaining abo
