mark segraves, what have you learned? >> reporter: things were pretty heated in northeast. was a lot of action and fireworks. these are fireworks and m-80s going off last night we found littered throughout the streets and they sounded a gunshots when they got off. police say the trouble started just before 11:00 last night. that's when the 911 call came in and metro police responded for the reports of illegal fireworks. when they got here, according to police, they found a man with a handgun. police say that man opened fire on police firing several shots at him and at that point a metro police officer returned fire killing the suspect. now, today the metro police officer has been placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. they say no one else other than the suspect was injured during last night's shooting. now neighbors here tell us there's a lot of crime in this area and they've been asking for police support in this neighborhood. coming up at 5:00, you'll hear from some of the residents and you'll hear what the metro chief of police had to say to his staff
