our team is covering every angle of this crisis, and mark strassmann leads us off from just outside atlanta. and mark, is it possible that those jobless numbers could be even higher? >> reporter: well, here's what you have to consider, norah -- as grim as those numbers are, the reality is likely worse. america's latest jobless numbers hit like an overnight gut punch. candace delong lost both her jobs in los angeles. >> scared for the way life is going to be after, yes, if we're going to have jobs to come back to, yes. if we're going to have incomes to pay for things, yes. >> reporter: in the last two weeks one million californians have filed for unemployment. pennsylvania, nevada, massachusetts, and rhode island also bled badly. ten states reported more than 100,000 new unemployment claims. hardest hit sectors -- the hospitality industry, travel and tourism, and retail. economist diane swonk warns reality dwarfs the official numbers. >> this is such an unprecedented surge. and those people applying for unemployment insurance, the sites actually froze. >> reporter: in many states, applying f

. >> reporter: i'm mark strassmann at atlanta's grady hospital. all 100 beds in this intensive care unit were full and then cvid-19 hit. viral patients are now quarantined wherever the hospital finds space. dr. robert jansen, its chief medical officer -- >> so the stress is not just capacity, it's not just stress of supplies, but on the individuals themselves, taking care of those patients. >> reporter: because? >> because so much is not known. >> reporter: at all of atlanta's four major hospitals, every icu bed is taken. >> just kind of deteriorated. by sunday the fever had not coughing.ne >> reporter: justin anthony is talking about his cousin, emma. she's 12. one of georgia's youngest coronavirus patients. tonight, emma's hooked to a ventilator at atlanta's children's hospital. in alabama, a newborn baby girl is in isolation after her nurse tested positive for covid-19. back in georgia, at this one rural hospital, 12 covid-19 patients have died. >> they've asked for help. unfortunately, we don't have capacity to take their patients. >> reporter
