ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo. live again here with a much closer look at the conditions those crews are facing. mark. hi there. >> garcia. yeah. typically we talk about red flag fire warnings, but this is a particularly dangerous situation with this red flag warning. almost just like the extreme red flag warning combined with those real strong winds. the strongest wind event since 2011. so you can see some of the winds from this morning. of course, yesterday we had winds gusting close to 100 miles an hour. so the red flag warning is in place today into your thursday. but there's the chance we could have wind advisories for friday. so fire danger is still elevated for friday. but fortunately these alarming values have been a reality. see the damaging winds? it's a dry weather setup as well. relative humidity right around 8 to 15%. so this is the pattern we do not like to see. and remember this is january. we're talking about a pattern like this. you can see some of the current wind reports from some of the airports

mark tamayo. it might just be fair to say that about everyone in the county is affected in one way or another by these fires. >> absolutely. gasia just have to remind myself, this is january, and we're talking about these extreme fires burning in southern california. and i wish i could say there would be a pattern change that could really help out the fire crews. there will be some changes, but in terms of fire danger completely going away, that will not be the case. the red flag fire warning is in place until 6 p.m. friday, but i suspect into the weekend, or at least into next week, we will have more warnings because we're going to have those gusty offshore winds stick around into next week. right now, though, at least the forecast, you can see winds gusting around 50 to 65 miles an hour. when these fires started, we had winds gusting to 80 to 100 miles an hour. so the winds have backed off. but still we have strong winds and it's a dry weather pattern as well. here's a satellite showing you the

let's go now to meteorologist mark tamayo for our final look at our forecast. hi, mark. >> hi there. christina. yeah. unsettled weather as you were talking about severe weather for portions of northern california. the national weather service will head out to that zone tomorrow. and as a result, we'll get more information, more of a confirmation. but it is already a confirmed tornado. as you can see the location. you can see just to give you some bearing here, there's red bluff redding and just to the east of cottonwood with that tornado report. here is the radar imagery from earlier today. this all happened during the 5:00 hour. so that's when we had the tornado warning issued. and then it actually expired at 6:00. and thankfully no damage or injuries to report. showing you rainfall for us here in the bay area, those numbers adding up. so we had kind of a soggy friday across parts of the bay area, especially up in the north bay. santa rosa 0.46, san francisco 0.18. and here is the plan this weekend. it will be dry, but it won't be completely sunny. we have some

all right, let's talk about our bay area weather with mark tamayo mark, we've been in a bit of a dry here in the bay area, but that could change. >> yeah, that's our thinking, greg. the last rainfall three weeks ago. it's been a long dry stretch for us, but that will be changing, possibly for the bay area as we head into the weekend. as we take a look at your forecast for you. sun cloud mix for your saturday. there is a chance of a scattered shower developing in the afternoon hours and into the evening, and that shower chance could linger into sunday morning as well, so it's not a widespread heavy rain event for us, but still could be an interesting radar picture by tomorrow afternoon. now it's chilly overnight. a frost advisory, another one. we've had a string of these over the past week in place for the north bay valleys and the inland valleys. overnight temperatures will be in the 30s, and a wind advisory is in place right now until, let's see, 10:00 sunday morning for the north bay hills and parts of solano county. gusts could be approaching 40 to maybe 50 miles an hour, so it co

let's talk about the winds in southern california and bring in meteorologist mark tamayo. mark. >> hi there. alex. yeah, we have not seen a big time shift in the weather pattern. and as a result, the fires. no big shift in in the overall containment here. you can take a look at the satellite. we're showing you the two fires, the satellite picking up the smoke plumes here. and that is the palisades fire. and look at all that smoke being produced by the eaton fire. you can see moving out into the pacific now, in terms of the headlines with with the fire danger, the red flag warning continues. that's in place until 6 p.m. friday. and i will say beyond 6 p.m. friday, we will still have elevated fire danger. and there's the chance we could have more red flag warnings into the weekend or next week. a high wind warning for the mountains of southern california begins at 6:00 tonight until 2 p.m. friday, and a wind advisory is in place until 2 p.m. friday. take a look at the map with the high wind warnings. that's the areas that are showing up in red here. we are expecting winds ove

mark tamayo, our meteorologist is here and boy, do we need rain throughout the state. >> yeah, the weatherattern has changed around quite a bit, so we had some scattered rain here in the bay area. and that same system is already moving into southern california. so finally we're talking about some rain in southern california. look at that. the radar. it's fairly active right now and we are expecting some more rainfall as we move into sunday and into monday. so all the green areas, those are flood watches for the fire zones in place. you can see the skycast bringing in the clouds and the rain showers. this is as we do move into sunday. the rainfall rates will be picking up showing you this. the projected amounts have been kind of going back and forth, but in general about a half an inch to maybe over an inch of rain. there's about a 20% chance or 10 to 20% chance of a significant debris flow if we get the right intensity of the high intensity of rainfall. so be watching out for that as we head into sunday and into monday. now, rainfall totals here in the bay area, not everybody picking up a

our meteorologist, mark tamayo, has been monitoring what's happening. ing at these live pictures, mark, you can tell a lot just by what the smoke is doing, can't you? >> yeah. that's right. gasia you kind of made that that that accurate observation earlier defined wind out of the northeast pushing that smoke plume in one direction. that's been the common theme with all these fires, unfortunately, in southern california. so that huge fire that started at 1053 this morning and is already up to 500 acres just by the visuals, will continue to grow rapidly, unfortunately, because the weather will be a challenge. we've been talking about the current red flag warning. this is also a high wind warning picking up as well, so this warning is in place until 8 p.m. thursday. winds easily 25 to 35 miles an hour, and some of the gusts for the higher peaks up above 50 miles an hour. so here's a map you can see of the huge fire. just for reference, here is bakersfield. way up to the north. here is santa clarita and right around the lake castaic. there you can see that w

we'll bring in our meteorologist, mark tamayo, now. mark the first tornado of the year. yeah. >> in california. who would have guessed? >> yeah, definitely. yeah. and it was erupted quickly during the 5:00 hour without warning in place. so the tornado warning from around 515 ish to around 6:00. and the national weather service will be heading to that area tomorrow to get more information. but to survey the damage or just what? the survey of the area. so this was the location of that storm report. just to give you an idea, here you can see red bluff, cottonwood redding there. and there is the location of that tornado from earlier today. so this all happened during the 5:00 hour. so this is the radar imagery between four and about 6:00. and you can see all that bright yellow and red showing up on the radar right about here. and that is linked up with that tornado that we were seeing visually on, on that tower camera. so still that thankfully that warning expired at 6:00 this evening and no longer that threat out there. now, here in the bay area, you can see santa rosa 0.46

. >> the winds continue to be a concern down in la, so we'll bring in ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo for another night of winds. >> yeah, it's frustrating because there's active fire behavior right now, but they're actually getting a break in terms of the weather for tonight into the first half of the weekend. but things will be changing by tomorrow night as we take a look at the maps. right now, you can see the fire zones as you just we've been talking about these, at least the two biggest fires, the eaton fire and the palisades fire. you can see the red perimeter lines around both of these fires as well as we do. take a look at the current conditions in southern california closer to these fire zones, not immediately in the fire zone, but at least the universal message is the winds have backed off a lot. you can see a calm wind report out toward burbank, lax winds only eight miles an hour, and ontario. the past couple of days been gusting over 30 miles an hour right now, only reporting a calm wind. now a fire weather watch already being prepped for saturday evening through sunday af

let's bring in meteorologist mark tamayo. mark, you are tracking the weather here in the bay area. and of course, the wind situation down there in southern california. >> yeah, here in the bay area, chilly morning out there. and in southern california, they have the gusty winds and they still have a red flag fire warning in place. and for the rest of today, tomorrow and into your thursday. so down from up, as you can see from from ventura county approaching los angeles county, approaching san diego as well. a red flag warning until 8 p.m. thursday. winds have been trending down over the past few hours, so that's a good sign. but they could pick up once again tomorrow and the top gusts could be approaching or topping 50 miles an hour. so it's that dry offshore wind, the santa ana wind that will redevelop into your wednesday forecast. and it's very dry, dry relative humidity down right around 2%. so the high fire danger threat will continue in southern california. and it will basically be a factor as we move into wednesday and into thursday. we are actually beyond 15 days with the la

. >> we want to turn now to meteorologist mark tamayo. mark, you have been tracking the conditions down in southern california all week long. where do we stand now? >> well hi there christina. the winds actually backed off a bit today, but we are expecting the winds to pull up later on tonight into tomorrow morning. so we still have red flag warnings. we still have high wind warnings and wind advisories as well. here's the satellite picking up on those big smoke plumes here. you can definitely see the fires here. this is the palisades fire. that smoke drifting out to sea. and then also this is the fire. and much bigger smoke plume once again drifting out to sea as well. of course, with all that, you have poor air quality in parts of southern california. so some of the headlines, the red flag fire warning remains in place for tonight until 6 p.m. friday. there's the chance we could have more red flag warnings down the road, because we still have elevated fire danger into the weekend and especially into next week. a high wind warning focused

. >> all right, let's talk weather now with meteorologist mark tamayo. rk, we were talking about those winds being a real worry down south as they had another event. but things are okay. >> yeah, they're definitely trending in the right direction right now greg. but we're looking long range in the next week. there's a chance we could see those winds ramp up. so not out of the woods just yet, but take a look. the red flag warning is kind of a shrinking in coverage. we still have some areas under a red flag warning in southern california, mainly for the higher elevations here, especially out toward the san gabriel mountains. and that is in place until 3:00 thursday. but we are scaling back on the winds, but still elevated fire danger in parts of southern california. here is the forecast model. this is early tomorrow morning. and then this is tomorrow morning, 4 a.m, and you can see still a bit of a breeze out there. but those winds will actually see a more of a reversal onshore breeze. and that could help transport some more moisture into the fire zones lat

let's now bring in meteorologist mark tamayo. mark these powerful winds, creating a worst case scenario for fires. yeah. >> that's right greg. so dry in southern california, the winds really picking up throughout the day today in fact really increasing this evening. in fact this was the scene earlier this afternoon looking out toward the palisades fire. here's the satellite showing you that smoke plume, a defined wind out of the north and northeast, pushing that smoke plume out into the pacific, and some of the winds gusting. typically, a windy day would be 30 to 40 to maybe 50 miles an hour. these numbers are really up there. burbank. over 80 miles an hour. same for the malibu hills, beverly hills one side and the hills there. actually 71 miles an hour even closer to the coastline. huntington beach, 51mph. right now. you can see some more wind reports for southern california. the red flag fire warning is in place for all these areas in red, into your wednesday and into your thursday. so unfortunately, this forecast is verifying w

meteorologist mark tamayo here mark that wind continuing to fan these flames. >> yeah the wind in fact actually expected to pick up tonight into tomorrow. so that's going to be a big challenge for the fire crews once again in southern california as they battle this fire with extreme fire growth today. take a look at the this picture from earlier today. you can see just this plume and all being pushed by strong offshore winds. you can see basically from there's the initial starting point then being pushed out to the west with those santa ana winds developing. so this fire, which started at 1053 this morning, is at over 9000 acres. so just to just extreme fire growth here, you can get the idea of the location there to the north of santa clarita. and we'll show you some of the current wind reports right now and still some gusts with warm springs at one site showing you gusts to 30 miles an hour and whittaker peak gusting to 28. relative humidity. the moisture is so low down into the single digits around 7 to 8%. now, in the short term, we have a high wind warning that goes into effect. no

. >> we want to bring in ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo. now with a look at the conditions there. mark, the big talk was tuesday is going to be a day to watch with the winds. >> yeah we had the period of a stronger winds today. but probably those winds actually not reaching the expectations. but it looks like as we move into wednesday, another pulse of some very strong winds. and hopefully that will be kind of the last episode with it with with the wind event. but take a look at some of the winds over the past day or so. you can see adding up in the san gabriel mountains. that's one site called magic mountain, showing you a gust of 74 miles an hour, the malibu hills 47 miles an hour, and the winds have been trending down this afternoon. so that is a nice development, but they will trend up once again. so here's a look at the eaton fire. you can see the red fire perimeters here. and also out toward the palisades fire showing up on this map as well as we show you some of the current wind reports right now, at least these panels, not too bad. lacks a westerly wind at about ten miles p

meteorologist mark tamayo joins us with a look at the forecast. and mark, you talked about how different it was going to be in southern california versus here. and wow huge difference. >> yeah, we have some wind. but the area of low pressure is focused down in southern california. and as a result they have the extreme winds. we had some some gusty conditions. we continue to have some gusty conditions out there as well. take a look at lax rainfall since october 1st, they've only picked up 0.03in of rainfall. that is only 0.7% of average, so way below average. obviously with with those numbers that are alarming. so their their rainfall season has yet to start and they're still dealing with fire season. unfortunately, this could be the strongest wind event since 2011. now back here in the bay area the winds definitely picking up. we'll continue to have some winds for tonight into tomorrow. mount saint helena 76 miles an hour. sonoma ridge trail over 50 miles an hour. bunch of winds around 34 to 36 miles an hour for santa rosa, scotts valley and in the

let's check in with meteorologist mark tamayo for a look at your forecast on this thursday. i there. >> under the clouds. expected to move in later on this afternoon into tonight, but today is a fairly nice day. good chance to get outside. but here's our next system offshore here. and rainfall expectations. all this is going to be happening tomorrow. so we're kind of getting ready for this. it's not a major deal but you can see rainfall expectations about a 10th of an inch in the south bay could be upwards of an inch up in parts of the north bay. winds around 20 to 30 miles an hour. and this will be a snow producer in the sierra. in fact, it's a colder system. so as a result, snow levels coming down to around 5000 5500ft. and here is that winter storm warning that is in place for a good portion of friday, 7 a.m. until 10 p.m, and snowfall could be right around 6 to 12in. so this is all linked up with the system that's going to move into the for tomorrow. then once it moves on out, it looks like a dry weather stretch for quite some time. so here's the forecast model showing yo

. >> all right, let's talk about our bay area weather with meteorologist mark tamayo. mark, we're going to talk about something we have not in a very long time, which is the chance of some rain. >> yeah, it's in fact, it's been three weeks since we had some rainfall here in the bay area, and now we have a cold chain setting up into the weekend. so get ready. beginning tomorrow, you'll notice a change in temperatures. take a look here. we'll just show you one. one run of the forecast model does bring in some rain and sierra snowfall. and look where that rain is moving toward. down towards southern california, down toward the fire zones, especially by the sunday period. for us this weekend, we do have a sun cloud mix. there is the chance of a shower tomorrow. winds will be picking up and then into sunday we'll hold on to that possibility of a lingering shower primarily into the morning hours. temperatures mainly in the 50s all weekend long now. cold enough that we do have this tomorrow morning. a frost advisory for the north bay valleys and the inland valleys. the coolest

but meteorologist mark tamayo tells us that you are going to want to bring a couple of layers and maybe a heavy jacket if you're heading out, especially to the city tonight. >> yeah, that would be a good call, guys. yeah. temperatures. another frost advisory in fact posted for parts of the bay area tonight. so that chill will continue to pay us a visit as we do wrap up the year and head into 2025. so here is your forecast for this evening. not much in the way of fog, just some high clouds drifting in from the north. so with that we'll have partly to mostly cloudy skies, but not to worry about dense fog having an impact on visibility, as most of that high cloud cover will be way up in the sky, up above 15, up above 20,000ft. so we are expecting those temperatures to cool off quite a bit. and by midnight in san francisco, those readings could be back down into the upper 40s as we greet 2025. now, we had a frost advisory this morning. now another frost advisory tomorrow morning as well. in fact, this begins 10:00 tonight until 9 a.m. wednesday for parts of the north bay, the inland valleys

. >> all right on this new year's eve, meteorologist mark tamayo. looking at the weather and everyone has the same question because fireworks, i mean, those shows have been, you know, affected by low cloud cover. >> yeah, i think we're conditioned because of the summertime fog. yeah, the july fog. so if you're like a if you're at a fireworks aficionado, you might want to. this is your night, right? this is your night july. yeah. because yes, the weather will definitely behave tonight. no rain. that is good. yeah, we're looking pretty good for tonight as we head into your new year's eve forecast in san francisco. and we are not expecting much in the way of rain or anything like that. just some high clouds drifting overhead and some cold temperatures. so definitely bundle up with a thick coat and sweater or something like that. temperatures dropping off into the upper 40s by midnight. so definitely a chill in the air. in fact, cold enough that we do have a frost advisory for the north bay inland valleys and the santa clara valley that begins tonight 1

got mark tamayo here. we'll talk a little weather locally, but musk landing pretty good sized fire right now at the power plant there, right on monterey bay. how's the weather down there? >> yeah, of course, when something like this, you want to take a look at the winds to see how things could be transporting all that, all that, just the plumes and stuff. so you get the idea. here on the mapping system, we could show you monterey bay. there's santa cruz up to the north for reference. and here's moss landing. and in general we have light winds in this area. so that means anything that goes up, there's really nothing to blow it around. you can see variable wind conditions from monterey to salinas to watsonville and all in the single digits. so there's nothing to really transport any of that out of the area as far as the smoke or anything like that. so something to be watching closely for this evening back here in the bay area, as far as the temperatures, lots of 60s out there for afternoon highs today, the k

i'm here with ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo, and the good news is quite a bit of rain. they haven't really had measurable rain since, what, april? something like that. >> i think los angeles going lax was .03 going back to october 1st. oh my gosh. >> well here it comes. >> it's coming. yeah for sure. so the changes are developing for tomorrow. in fact a nice change setting up for friday and into the weekend. so as we check out the hughes fire right now the fire zone, it is still windy. so right now it's still a challenge for the fire crews. winds gusting over 30 over 40 miles an hour. relative humidity is very low, down to 8%. now the red flag warning that will continue tonight and into your friday until 10:00 tomorrow morning. and then a change in the wind flow will be a nice welcome change for all the fire crews down there. here's the forecast model at midnight. you'll notice we'll see a wind switch. and this is tomorrow morning 10 a.m. and those winds actually not too bad. so this is a nice improvement for tomorrow. then here's that rainfall that returns this weekend

now to our weather meteorologist, mark tamayo. let's start in southern california because they have that red flag warning going on. >> it continues. we're still waiting for rainfall, but they still have the high fire danger once again tonight into tomorrow. mike. so once again, we're showing you a big red area on this map from ventura county all the way down to san diego. red flag, elevated fire conditions. so red flag warning continues right on through. in fact, this there was it was supposed to expire tonight. then another one was supposed to begin later on, but they just extended it until 8 p.m. thursday. winds potentially could be going up above 50 miles an hour in the hills. it's also a very dry air mass as well. those moisture levels could be coming down, possibly down to 2%. so here is the wind forecast for tomorrow. they're definitely picking up. you see that corridor from santa clarita to newhall to malibu hills and camarillo. and then throughout the day wednesday still breezy to windy out there. so we'll keep an eye on t

let's check in with meteorologist mark tamayo. mark, how's it looking down south? >> well, the winds definitely picked up as expected this morning. then it actually trending down this afternoon. so everything is trending in the right direction in southern california. but the red flag warnings continue for tonight and for some isolated areas continuing into your thursday as well. but showing you some of the winds gusts. the winds gusts of gusts over the past 2020 four hours. san gabriel mountains, one site showing you 62 miles an hour. the malibu hills, 54 miles an hour. so these these are the winds we have been concerned with. and they definitely picked up this morning. now red flag fire warnings in place once again for all these areas. down from san diego, up toward up, up toward ventura, closer to santa barbara as well. so the red flag warning, as you can see coming closer. we'll show you that pds that particularly dangerous situation until 6:00 this evening. so that is good news. we are heading toward that expiration time winds still a bit of a breeze out there.

ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo here now with a look at the conditions. hi, mark. >> hi, there.christina. yeah. if you're lucky to be up in the sierra this weekend. perfect timing. some great snow. after the recent system that moved in to the bay area. and also in the sierra. you can see the snowpack tallies here. see the bulk of it favoring the northern sierra. 156% of average. so that's where the focus has been so far over the past couple of months. so statewide, the snowpack, you can see about 106% of average. so a nice start. we definitely need more. but looks like we're heading into a bit of a dry stretch into the weekend for the rest of the weekend and into next week. highs from today in the 50s to the lower 60s. somewhat of a chill in the air, especially during the morning hours tomorrow. most areas will be a bit warmer. i think we'll have a few more 60s out there, but still some pockets of fog tomorrow morning. partly sunny and a bit of a breeze. we see around 10 to 15 miles an hour. there's your temperature range around 58 to 64 degrees. here's the satellite, where you

meteorologist mark tamayo joins us now with a look at what's in store for our bay area forecast. hey, mark. hi, there. greg. >> yeah, another system headed our way tomorrow morning. first thing tomorrow morning up in the north bay, then gradually spreading to the south. we had a break in the rainfall for today, but more rain for us and more snow in the sierra. in fact, just kind of a carry on with that. the snow survey in the sierra. you can see the breakdown for the north to the central portions of the sierra and the southern sierra. so clearly, all those atmospheric rivers really having an impact on northern californians, translating to these numbers as well. statewide average 108% of average. and we will continue to build the snowpack as we do move into friday. here is a look at the projections here. and snow levels actually coming down to possibly 5000 to 5500ft. and a winter storm warning begins tomorrow morning, 7 a.m, running until 10:00 tomorrow night. and snowfall could be around six to possibly 12in. so this will be a winter storm warning for the west slopes of the sierr

. >> the winds do continue to be a concern, so we'll bring in ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo a new red flag warning, though the winds shouldn't be as strong, not as strong as the peak event last tuesday. >> but what is concerning christina on the palisades fire today? the winds actually were not too bad, but there's still a lot of active fire behavior. so yeah, that's the headline. winds are ramping up right now. and another red flag warning in place. so taking a look at the fire zones, the fire perimeters, you can see the eaton fire and also the palisades fire closer to the coastline and will come in closer right now and show you some of the wind reports in southern california. and the overall trend, the overall tendency for tonight, these values will be increasing. one site there you see santa ana gusting to 26 miles an hour. we'll show you some more sites here. as you can see, closer to the eaton fire zone, winds gusting to 24 miles an hour. as we come in closer, take a look at these sensors right now. looks like bel air. about six miles an hour and lax at about five miles an hour.
