. >> joining me from ferguson, mark thompson, host of "make it plain" on sirius xm raid you, and altonioh who represents the 25th ward of st. louis, both at michael brown's funeral today. antonio french, tell us how -- two things i was watching blending together. one was family and friends' reminiscence about michael, the kind of things that you would have at any funeral. then the kind of larger frame that reverend al sharpton was using in his talk at the funeral. how were those two things blended? >> yeah, i think today's event served two purposes. one, for the family of michael brown. provided a sense of closure. it provided an opportunity to begin and another step in the process of healing. but also for the community. that's gone through a lot these last two weeks. thousands of people came to show their support for the brown family. but also, as an opportunity for us as a community to also begin that road to healing and to have a little closure to this tragic death of this young man. so i think the speakers today did a good job of blending those two interests. and especially reverend

. >> joining me now is the host of msnbc's "the reid report" and from ferguson, missouri, mark thompsony, i may be the only one, because i've been study thing subject for so long, but i have watched cases like this come and go over the years without ever even getting a word of attention from presidents. this is something new. >> it is. it's interesting, because president obama is obviously weighted down by the expectations and in some cases the outside expectations that because he's the first black president that he is going to do unprecedented things when it comes to talking about race. but to your point, lawrence, the history of police brutality, presidents try to step back from it. there is the issue of not bringing the awesome power of the presidency to local officials. but the nearest thing i could find to a president addressing an issue of police brutality would be george walker bush about 19 days after the rodney king beating describing the video as sickening. before that, you have to go back to president clinton commenting on a killing. of course, rodney king wasn't killed, but

mark thompson gives us a breakdown of the demands. >> the clock is ticking. palestinian and israeli negotiators under pressure to reach an agreement, or risk restarting a bloody month of fighting. egypt appears to be focusing on hamas's demand that the blockade of the territory be lifted after eight years. that could see border crossings with egypt and israel reopened. the palestinian side, which includes the palestinian authority, also wants the release of prisoners to be part of any deal, as well as an increase in permits for gazans to enter israel, fishing rights, and more truck's be allowed into the region. for israelites, they want palestinians fully disarmed and a mechanism to ensure border crossings and that goods are not exploded. israel does not deal directly with hamas. its charter calls for the distraction of the jewish state. they hope any agreement will bring control back under the palestinian authority. they have both said they will resume fighting if this latest round of negotiations sales. >> meanwhile, six people have died in gaza in an accid

>> as you just heard from mark thompson, it's a very complex issue but very important. so the purpose of our campaign which is called talk, read, sing is to take this -- the notion of the importance of early brain development and push it out to the public and those families who have young children or who are caregivers of young children and emphasize how important it is to interact with kids and stimulate the brain so that it grows and develops in the earliest years. and in the long run actually works to prevent the achievement gap. if we can get kids to develop their vocabularies and start out in school, not behind their peers, they have a much better chance to succeed in school and in life. but so the campaign really talks about -- we have two psas. 30 seconds long, you can only talk so much about brain development in 30 seconds. we cut to the chase and talk about the importance of that early engagement and language stimulation in the earliest of years from the day a child is born. >> i know we can't show the psas because there are lights involved, but you have everyb
