so masterfully on the ladies and gentlemen, please join me in welcoming to the kennedy library mark updegrove. [applause] >> i guess the competition never really ends. but mark, this is an extraordinary book you have done, "indomitable will." it is a portrait but it doesn't fall into the trap that so many oral history because its dramatic. you get a sense of what johnson's leadership style was. and it is such a contrasting leadership style with many other presidents. and because we're here at the jfk library, the book begins with that awful moment of his ascension to the presidency where lady bird johnson said people looked at the living and wished for the dead. that burden upon which, and the contrast between the two styles, talk a little bit about that relationship. >> thanks, john. i do want to respond to my dear friend and my colleague, tom putnam by saying a, the story is true, and the, i think would more visitors last year than the jfk library. [ laughter ] and mark updegrove of the lyndon baines johnson's library right downhe road. first i want to say something about doris kerns good win. we're fortunate to have her here. she is an awesome historian, she really is. i read a lot of history when i was president. i can hear people saying, we paid you all that money and all you did was read? sit around reading? it was fascinating. i didn't watch much tv. it was fascinating to read history while i had the honor of making history. and no better historian to help a president understand the past and future by the way, than for doris kearns goodwin. so we're honored you're here. [ applause ] and so the other thing that impressed me about doris kearns goodwin, she raised a son who became a united states marine. volunteered to be a united states marine after september the 11th.
