mark updegrove. >> presidential historian, mark updegrove, thank you for joining us today. i want to get right into it and talk about the tragic chain of.events. we heard vice president mike pence calling it a dark day. chuck schumer said this day would live in infamy. i want to ask you, how will history remember this day? >> well i think the senate majority leader said it right. this will be a day, as franklin roosevelt said about pearl harbor, that will live in infamy. we remember december 7th, 1941, for that tragic bombing that brought us into world war ii. we think about december 2nd, 1962, the day john f. kennedy was assassinated, september 11th, the day al qaeda bombed washington and new york, this is something we will always remember. the good news is that we came out of those tragedies closer as a nation, realizing that something was wrong and that we had to unite. and my hope is that we will become closer as a result of this day which will live in infamy. >> and we are hearing talks about invoking the 25th amendment, americans want something accountability for the events that took place today. there are other options. there is impeachment talks being brought up by some lawmakers and there's censure. can you explain the differences? >> the 25th amendment of the constitution, which many are invoking right now was put into place in the 1960s. and one of the provisions is if the vice president and the majority of cabinet officers vote to get rid of the president, that goes to the president pro tem of the senate and it is voted on in the house and the senate. if they get a two-thirds majority in both of those bodies, the president is expelled if he doesn't remove himself in the process. that is a way of bypassing an impeachment proceeding in the house and a courtroom proceeding in the senate that would ultimately expel the ptresident as well. it's never happened before, mona. we have two weeks left of this president being in office. my guess is it probably will not happen now, either. >> and we were two weeks out from the biden/harris administration beginning. what does history tell us about what joe biden needs to do in order to unite this country, especially after this presidential election? >> you know, there's an old saying, let no good crisis go to waste. i think what this shows is that america is hopelessly divided. but i think we can come together, as i mentioned earlier, in times of tragedy. joe biden can not only use this moment to bring us together, but perhaps to put together some law that will help this country to move forward and make sense of this tragedy. >> and lastly, mark, as a presidential historian, what do you take away from the events that happened today? >> ultimately, i think this is the way that donald trump will be remembered. this will be the principal part of his you legacy. putting our democracy under siege. we have never seen an incumbent president attack our democracy before. and hopefully we will never see it again. >> thanks to mark and we're already seeing the first drafts of history being printed on today's papers. "the washington post" writing, pro trump mob storms capitol building. the "new york times" headline, mob incited u.s. capitol. >> and the other big question is how is the party going on react? we're hearing from another republican senator, john thune, who was asked is it time to move away from trump? he said i don't think there's any question about that. what happened today is indicative that we have to chart court. >> lindsey graham also breaking ranks with trump. coming up, a look inside the protest as it unfolded. >> a wa

mark preston in washington. so, mark, help us understand this. so senator hawley was the first to say he is going to object to this certification of joe biden and now we've since learned that 11 other republicans may be on board. what could potentially happen on wednesday? >> well, he's welcomed those 11 on board. so it looks like he has the support now. you have now 11, 12 republican senators who are going to object, or at least vote to object to the certification. now we don't necessarily know how this is going to play out. our lauren fox, capitol hill, is digging deep on this. but what we've learned so far is that we have 11 senators, ted cruz is going to be one of them. and that's interesting. we can come back to him momentarily. we believe that hawley is going to vote not to certify the electors from missouri. now the question is, do these other 11 do the same and follow hawley or do they do it for their own states? we don't know yet. the bottom line is we heard this from chuck schumer, who just tweeted out the bottom line is 18 days from now, joe biden and kamala harris will be in the white house. and that's true. that is absolutely true. this is just gamesmanship, politics at its worst and partisanship at a point right now where we've seen so many people die in the month of december. the deadliest month of covid, and they are playing games right now over whether or not to certify joe biden as president. >> and how is this beneficial and to whom is this beneficial, especially since the understanding is, if time is taken in an objection, even if it's at least one objection that perhaps senator hawley will bring, there will be two hours spent, you know, on trying to digest, you know, what this objection is and proof needs to be brought, but we already know there have been some 60 defeated lawsuits to overturn this election. states have already certified the vote. so, you know, how much credence will be put into whatever objections that are brought now after so many defeats? >> you know, the circus is certainly in town now. and we're going to see it on the 6th. listen, what's going to happen is when this objection is made by somebody in the house of representatives, perhaps mel brooks and josh hawley, you'll see the house and senate who are together to certify the results then have to break apart go to their separate chambers, debate is each separately and then come back together and address it. all this is going to do is to help folks who are trying to rile you up their base for their own political game once trump leaves office. this is what this is all about. it's about their own political gain. >> and it sounds like, i mean, you know, senate majority leader mitch mcconnell has already sort of made the inference that nothing will come of it, but i'm going to give you this moment. we can have this, you know, vote of conscience if you will. and we can talk about it amongst ourselves, but it really will not move the needle. what kind of position does this put him in, however, when you have gaining support at least from senator hawley's objections. now you've got this near dozen who say, you know, we're on board with objecting to joe biden being sworn in in 18 days? >> i think mitch mcconnell may be one of the most misunderstood people in washington. i say that because of this. people think that he takes things personally and whenever he does something politically that is dis -- it doesn't help the democrats, that it's really a personal attack. mitch mcconnell is all about business. he understands that he's very much like a parrot with 18-year-old and 19-year-old children. he can't tell them what to do. he can try to persuade them not to do something but at the end of the day, they're going to do what they're going to do. he's take be the tact which is the path of least resistance for himself to try to get through this and just stay just enough away from it to let them have their piece. and, look, they can have their piece. they are allowed to do it. we should acknowledge that, but the fact is why do it when you know it's not going to result in the outcome that you want. unless the outcome that you want is your own political future. >> you say it may not be personal for mitch mcconnell. i wonder if it is at the very least embarrassing because he does want to, like you said, a parent with his children, wants to demonstrate some control of this caucus. >> and, look, i think in some ways, that he probably is frustrated by this because this is just another hurdle that he has to deal with, within his own republican conference. but the bottom line is that mitch mcconnell knows that joe biden and kamala harris are going to be in the white house. but he also knows he has to oversee these republican senators for at least another two years. so he's got to walk that fine line right now. let them do what they want to do. knowing that it's going to feel, but the fact of the matter is morally, it's a ridiculous thing to do given that there's so much to do right now in this country. >> mark, let me ask you quickly about these reports of vandalism of mcconnell's kentucky home and of house speaker nancy pelosi's san francisco home. all of this happening overnight. we have not heard that they are connected, but, wow, what a coincidence. and in both cases, what is scribbled in the graffiti makes references to the stimulus checks. >> right. outrageous. listen. it's outrageous. people can be angry, they can be mad. they can picket outside of these lawmakers houses but you know what they can really do? mark sanford. mark, thank you for being with us. as you look at all this playing out, is this the future of the republican party? >> i can only hope not, because if so, the republican party is headed for extinction. i think that you see shoots of green, whether that is in what liz cheney did on capitol hill or what a handful of folks did in sort of pushing back on some of the craziness that's been invoked there in the stuff at the capitol here of late. i would simply say i hope not, and if we stay on this course, indeed, we're headed for political extinction. >> if republicans, and we're looking at republican leaders who years ago took very different approaches here, and it would have been hard to imagine them siding with someone or certainly not disavowing someone like greene or bovert. if they don't disavow these kinds of things, do they end up owning them? >> yes, silence is deafening. and silence is, in essence, acquiescence. it is a casual form of absolute condoning of what doesn't fit. i think it's telling, though, if you look at the majority of the republican house membership representing georgia, they've spoken up fairly strongly against some of the crazy that's been coming from marjorie. and so i think that that's a good sign. we need, obviously, more of that, but i think in fairness to someone like cardi has said some of the things they've said are not appropriate, and that comes from right there in georgia. >> we see kevin mccarthy, the house republican leader, travel to florida to visit with donald trump and try to smooth things over. what is your assessment of what that means about where the party is? >> i don't think that's an assessment of the party. i think that's an assessment of kevin mccarthy. kevin mccarthy, with due respect, wants to be loved by too many people. at times politics means taking a stand, and some people are going to love you for it and some people are going to hate you for it, but you've got to take a stand. kevin is a very convincing guy, and he's got great social graces, but he too much tries to straddle the fence and he too much tries to be in the trump camp, and yet prior to the seeds the -- siege there at the capitol, he was saying it's crazy and then he backs away from it. pick a flavor and stick with it. >> both these congresswomen i talked about, there are people in the house that want to expel them for their comments. do you think greene and bovert should be removed? >> no, i think that's an individual decision. you're going to have people that say stupid things and that's on both sides of the aisle. it's the voters' call to expel them. it's not a peer group call. you don't work for somebody in washington, you work for people in your district, and i hope that resonates with the voters at home. it's my hope that during the primary season you see these two folks disappear. >> greene, for instance, supported the possible execution of the speaker of the house. isn't that something different? >> in her social media activity, there was a question about -- or there was someone suggesting an execution of house speaker nancy pelosi, and she responded certainly not in the negative, i will put it that way. i'm paraphrasing here, i don't have the quote direct until front of me, but it was about things being in place. it was bad. let me characterize so you can trust that it was very bad. when you have a situation like that, imagine going back to being in congress and having one of your colleagues be someone who is talked about, let's say you're in the majority, having talked about or seeming to support the possible execution of the speaker. >> wrong, period, let me be clear. i'm not on the side of people saying crazy and there's been way too much crazy out of d.c. for the last four years. >> that's up to voters, in your estimation, it's not up to something that maybe should be dealt with in the house? that's really my question. >> well, nancy pelosi could bring proceedings forward, you know, if she wanted to do so. ultimately that's a nancy call, not a markleanse itself, certainly, and there are things by which they can do so, but that ultimately would be driven by the speaker of the house and the majority leadership on both sides, and i've heard nothing on that front. again, it's their call, and i have no problem with self-regulation and self-cleansing if things get too far afield. but ultimately the real field is cleaned by the voter. >> thank you, governor mark sanford, for being with us today. >> yes, ma'am. >>> new york governor andrew cuomo is accused of undercounting coronavirus deaths at nursing homes. we will roll the tape. and he just responded to this report by his own attorney general. what if you could have the perspective to see more? "what am i supposed to believe in if not communism", asks lyuda as her beliefs are challenged in the fallout of a factory strike and protest to which the army and kgb respond with deadly force. as the authorities rush to cover up a state—sponsored atrocity, lyuda searches for her missing daughter, for whose life she fears after scenes of terrible violence. based on real events, that were not officially acknowledged until 30 years later, dear comrades is a powerfulfilm that draws visual inspiration from soviet classics like the cranes are flying and ballad of a soldier. presenting its bleakly crisp black and white images in a retro four by three frame. the result is an affecting recreation of a terrifying historical event that at times recalls the impact of the infamous 0dessa steps scene from battleship potemkin. conjuring an utterly convincing world in which the stillness of the cameras merely amplifies the sense of growing chaos. yet despite the true grit of its historical setting, it's the personal story of lyuda's journey that gives dear comrades such an emotional punch, with vysotskaya perfectly embodying a character who slips from stoic political stalwart to frantically anguished mother before our very eyes. it's available now on curzon home cinema with plans for a big—screen theatrical release whenever that becomes possible. david. i'm sorry, can you repeat the question? who, or what is david bowie? from the sublime to the ridiculous with stardust, a trite, unauthorized reimagining of david bowie*s 1971 american tour which opens with the disclaimer: what follows is mostly fiction. it's also mostly rubbish, hobbled by the legally required absence of any original songs by bowie, who died five years ago, and whose estate wanted nothing to do with this movie. i need to be known, i need them to know me! instead, accomplished actor/musician johnny flynn is left to bash out a couple of bowie related cover versions like jacques brel*s my death. while musicjournalists merrily misquote lyrics to the man who sold the world. presumably because the film—makers don't have the rights to use the real ones. now, this in itself would not necessarily be terrible. tom haynes brilliantly inventive velvet goldmine was similarly denied access to bowie*s back catalog, but sparkled anyway. there is no authentic to me. it'sjust fear. yet with stardust, a clunky script co—written by director gabriel range makes heavy weather of alleged psychological scars, painting bowie*s supposed fear of family schizophrenia in unsubtle strokes that lack invention, insight or width. strokes that lack invention, insight or wit. the key elements of bowie*s ever—changing career. perhaps a different way to talk about me when on the phone. comedian podcaster mark as stateside publicist ron 0berman, and jenna malone cuts a vaguely sympathetic figure as bowie*s wife angie. butjust when you think that maybe they can save this debacle, along comes james cade whose impression of mark bolan is so toe curling that i had to take my shoes off and then throw them at the screen. it all recalls the opportunist silliness of 2003's grand theft parsons, another film which turned a modern rock legend into a bad joke. you can find stardust on a range of home viewing platforms, but bowie fans would be better served just dusting off their old lps and basking in the majesty of a talent to which this shoddy affair cannot hold a candle. oh, and if you want some of the real bowie on screen, then check out next week's secrets of cinema on pop movies. bbc four, tuesday night. i mention it only in passing. now we are getting somewhere. now, 1945 saw the release of david lean's acclaimed adaptation of noel coward's blithe spirit. a hit stage play which had taken london
