markey still has the upper hand.ynch. he's a real scrappy guy, fought hard for every election he's been in and won them. hair has been on fire as one political operative told me. this is a progressive voting block that is going to dominate this election and that's marke yrk's group. >> i want to put up a couple of statistics from the last special. it's amazing. you guys are holding more special elections for senate races than senate races that are regularly scheduled lately. in 2009, december 2009, you had under 700,000 democrats show up and about 165,000 republicans. let's look at the democratic primary a minute. 350,000 is is essentially a winning number. would you rather be ed markey looking for 350,000 votes in his district or steven lynch? if they could just get democrats in their own district to show up, you could make those numbers work. >> you could. the problem is in this special election is really being called into question. the process of special elections in massachusetts. voters aren't paying attention.

markey. >> i am the principal author of the legislation intended to make sure that rail security is much more secure within our country. i am the author of the legislation that moves toward ensuring that chemical plants, for example, are, you know, protected within our country. so look at tsh on our two records, i think we both tried our best to work hard. my priorities, however, wowbtd up being the law of the united in order to protect the security of our country. >> go ahead. >> you voted no. you voted no on the port security bill. you voted on creating joint terrorism task force. the group that enabled our response if special agent, commissioner ed davis, colonel, if all the agencies couldn't work together. we would not have had the effect i have response. clearly i voted yes. i don't know how you spend it. you voted no. it's just . >> that's the fact. >> go ahead. >> i support the existence of immigration of the joint terrorism task force. i don't know the specifics circumstances at that

i think it's markey.in a city that should be a laboratory for that. white-collar, blue collar bright collar voters, you would think that lynch would have something going there and markey would have something going there. did not see much of anything for either candidate in my neighborhood maybe making me feel huh, a little anemic. and i went to south boston lynch's home base, and that did not look to be a welter of activity either. markey up in the polls by double digits and the feeling is that he's maybe tapped in a little bit better to the elizabeth warren turn out machine that will get the progressive suburbs out. i don't think lynch is getting what he needs, at least from boston to win this race. but honestly that's very preliminary, and it's just a guess based on anecdote tall evidence. >> michael: that's the feel you got from being out there. you mentioned south boston. there is a special election for the senate. could heavy turnout there be enough to push them over the top and how likely would that

markey? >> people who know me know that i take on the tough issues and i get results. 1994, there was another endemic of assault weapons on the united states. this qumsing from the chinese. they were selling millions of assault weapons for $130 or less and they had become the gun of preference on our streets of our country, you feel, i built a coalition to build the political pressure so we could, in fact, keep those weapons out of our country. in 1994, by executive action, president clinton did, in fact, do that after i built the coalition and they have been off the streets since 1994. so from my perspective, that is what you have to be able to do. that's why i want to go to the senate to build those bipartisan coalitions, especially on the kinds of issues that there is a brood consensus across our country. these assault weapons on our streets, near schools, the only technology that should be near a child in a school should be a computer, not a gun. special those that have the magazines that

my sense it will go markey by a comfortable margin, but you never know.ch is very feisty and has a good strong base. markey is a little bit more of a distant figure and washington insider, and kind of a hard to listen to order, but i think he has put the pieces of the democratic coalition together in a way that make me think he probably will win this. i think lynch has -- he sort of flip flopped into more alignment with the progressive democratic primary voter, but it seemed a little opportunistic, and i'm not sure people are exactly thrilled. labor comes out enthusiastically for him, but if i'm betting i think markey will win. >> michael: lynch represents dorchester, the town where the little boy lived that was killed in boston. so he has been seen a little bit more because of that. does a republican have a chance of winning this seat scot? >> not a convening shun republican, i do not believe. we have three republicans in here, mike sullivan is running. he is a social conservative who is running in a way to say even though i'm a social conservative, i'm

markey. the obama administration has chosen to prosecute the surviving suspect in the bombings in the federal court system. instead of before a military tribunal as an enemy combatant were where they have fewer constitutional protections. did they do the right thing? 90 seconds, sir. >> yeah, i believe that president obama and his justice department are completely committed to ensuring that case. is done in this we all heard president obama last week. he said there is a part of boston in him. he said that justice would be done in this case. if in the opinion of president obama and his justice department, the proper place for prosecution is here in the federal district court system of the state of massachusetts, i believe that the court system here in massachusetts can provide that kind of a venue in order to hear this case. so i defer to president obama. i defer to his justice department if in their judgment this is the proper place in order to conduct that trial. >> thank you, sir. mr. lynch

markey from mass marks as well as our other colleagues on the committee, mr. flores of texas and mr. holt of new jersey. first, this bill would implement a new operating system for the federal helium reserve over the next decade that would include semiannual auctions. this will ensure that we prevent a helium shortage and that the reserve stays open until all the helium supply is sold. second, it will build on the reforms made in 1996 and inject more free market principles into the sales process to get a better and fairer return for american taxpayers. over the last decade, the federal government has been selling helium from the reserve below market prices. as you can see from this chart, this is based on b.l.m. data, the new demands for helium have caused the market price to rise, much higher than the federal government's pricing formula. and much faster than b.l.m.'s ability to track market prices. as a result this has cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars. this has been been confirmed by reports and testimony from both the general accounting office, g.
