i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. police spent most of the night at this home on wilson avenue just across from interstate 580, from fruitvale elementary school. today in the bay's christie smith is outside children's hospital in oakland where the two other children are being treated. she joins us now on the phone. christie, at this point what have you learned? >> reporter: good morning. i can tell you we're outside of children's hospital in oakland where we aren't seeing much activity in terms of family members coming and going, but what a horrible story. a grandmother and three young children shot, as you said, one of them has died. oakland police are telling us they got a call of shots fired activation around is 1:15. that's the system that alerts them of gunfire. they also got neighborhood calls of gunfire in the 3400 block of wilson avenue. that's the lower diamond neighborhood. police say when they arrived they found a grandmother and two 7-year-old girls shot, also a 4-year-old boy was hit. all of the children

i'm marla tellez. jon kelley is off this morning. a 7-year-old girl was shot to death overnight in her own home in oakland. a grandmother and two other children in that home on wilson avenue near interstate 580 were also shot. today in the bay's christie smith is outside children's hospital in oakland where the two other children are now being treated. christie, this is such an awful story. what have you learned? >> reporter: good morning, marla. it's happened again. another horrible shooting here in oakland involving children, this time a 7-year-old girl shot and killed. as you said, she was with two other children. they were brought here to children's hospital oakland. we're told they're in stable condition this morning. we're not hearing much or seeing much in terms of family coming or going yet this morning. oakland police telling us they were called to the 3400 block of wilson avenue about 11:15 last night because of a shot spotter activation system. that's a series of microphones that let's them know when gunfire is happening.

>> reporter: good morning, marla. that's right.ight now we could see people going right through the glass doors here behind me downstairs, running to catch their morning train into san francisco. instead those doors are locked this morning. and what we're seeing is b.a.r.t. union workers on strike. some of them actually hit the picket line right around midnight when their four-year contract expired and when their shift ended. these are mechanics, station agents, clerks, some of the front-line people. a last-ditch effort by b.a.r.t. officials and the labor unions to avoid a strike, simply did not work out. with workers' contributions, to benefits, pensions and a wage increase, really some of the big issues that led to this. b.a.r.t. workers also said they have issues with safety concerns. but the real story this morning, 400,000 commuters ride b.a.r.t. each day. the big route, of course, from the east bay into san francisco. the talks actually came to an end around 8:30 last night when union negotiators left the state office buildin

good morning, marla. first bus arrives at 4:15 this morni morning, but it's not loading passengers yet. there are a couple dozen passengers here waiting to board those free chartered buses. b.a.r.t. did charter several buses to get passengers into the city. to help out with the commute. this is one of only four b.a.r.t. stations in the system that will run those buses. the other stations with chartered bus service are el sore eto dell norte, walnut creek and pleasantton until 9:00 a.m. and bring you from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. the buses will take you to the west oakland b.a.r.t. station and from there you will have to jump on another chartered bus, which will take you into the city. you cannot drive to the west oakland b.a.r.t. station and jump on one of those buses. you have to have a special ticket obtained from one of the four selected b.a.r.t. stations. now we ran into one couple this morning who had no idea there was a b.a.r.t. strike. >> we are just expecting good customer service, you know? it's go

marla, what's happening out there?porter: jon, i just spoke to a santa clara police officer who confirmed they are investigating an alleged sexual assault at a two-story apartment complex on homestead road right at kiely boulevard in santa clara. they say they got the call around 4:00 this morning. a woman in her 20s said she woke to find a stranger standing over her as she slept a man she did not know and he was holding a box cutter to her throat. i asked the officer if the woman was hurt in this incident, how she managed to get away. those details are not being released at this point. this woman was take tone the hospital. again, it's not clear if this woman was hurt in this alleged sexual assault. i asked about any suspect details. he said those are still being worked out. he said officers are inside this woman's apartment on homestead road right now collecting as much evidence as they possibly can including, of course, fingerprints. so at this point the person who was responsible for this alleged sexual assault. de

good morning, marla. >> reporter: good morning, jon. the parents of both the girls are on an asiana airlines flight, left china within the last hour. they are set to make the first stop in seoul, south korea and eventually make their way to sfo late they are evening, potentially not until tonight. when they do, their sights will be set on this office, the san mateo county coroner's office where they have questions, how did my daughters die. the coroner is expected to release new information about their autopsies. he says it is a possibility one of the girls survived the crash only to be run over by a fire truck as she scrambled to get to safety. officials say the other girl was likely ejected on impact. we will know for sure once their autopsies are complete. san francisco mayor ed lee says he's heard about the speculation that an emergency vehicle is to blame for one of the girl's deaths. he says the report cannot be verified. >> i don't have any information with respect to that particular description. i will say that all incidences th

>> marla, thank you very much.nother tough fourth of july seeing a home in north san jose gutted after a barbecue yesterday. a propane tank exploded while a family was out there cooking. that fire spread very quickly but firefighters were able to knock it down before it actually spread to other homes on sydney drive. while firefighters were there mopping up, another fire sparked, a separate one, two blocks away. witnesses there say a bottle rocket fell into trees and they caught fire in seconds. now, the flames were put out before they could actually spread to a nearby home or any homes there. happy to report, nobody in either of those fires was hurt. >>> firefighters also mopping up after two separate brush fires in the oakland hills. those fires broke out in joaquin miller park about 11:30 last night on opposite sides of the park. 60 firefighters from both the oakland and cal fire departments were called in to fight those fires. both fires were contained about 3:00 this morning, but crews are still on the scene c

marla, good morning. >> reporter: jon, good morning.massive explosion was caught on home video and it shows the moment the fireworks launcher tipped over and people started running for their lives. >> oh! oh! oh, my god! oh, oh, oh! run! run, run, run! >> reporter: you can hear just how scared this man is who is recording this. the fireworks essentially started shooting into the crowd of some 10,000 people. this happened about 9:20 last night at the rotary club's fireworks show in simi valley, which is about 40 miles northwest of los angeles. just into our newsroom, officials are calling this an industrial accident. it's believed at least one of the launching stations fell over just a few minutes into the show. in all, 28 people are hurt. most with mild injuries. though ventura county fire says four people are severely hurt. their injuries consistent with shrapnel and projectile-type injuries. witnesses explain the terrifying experience. >> it was like we were sitting right there, right in front of the whole thing and it only lasted lik

>> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, marla. home of carol miller and her stanford cat network. you can see carol right there. she's physically okay. this is where she fed and took care of around 100 cats. most of them trapped in their crates. you can see she's looking at one of the crates there. they were trapped when smoke and flame poured through her house overnight. their bodies, the remaining bodies are behind that fence, awaiting for burial. when this fire started around 1:45 this morning, carol was asleep on her couch. she tells us she had a smoke alarm, but for whatever reason, it did not go off. fortunately, she had bunny, her rescue dog, you can hear now barking in the white van there, she alerted her to the fire already raging in her back bedroom. carol was able to escape to the small backyard enclosure, a space she had secured to her cats could roam free. unfortunately, it kept her from getting away from the smoke and flames. she ended up hunkering down in a fetal position on the phone with 911. the fire department w

"today in the bay's" bob redell live with how one of the pets helped save her life. good morning. >> reporter: yes, good morning, marla. this house fire in south san jose, inside and outside the house, you have the crates that contain the bodies of as many as 100 cats, inside the van is the woman who is lucky to have survived. her smoke alarm was not working, but she had bunny, one of her rescue dogs, who did awake her around quarter to 2:00. she was asleep on the couch and awoke to find smoke and fire coming out of the bedroom in the back. she was able to escape with her dog to an enclosure in the very backyard. small enclosure, 8x12, secured to keep all of her cats inside. unfortunately, it kept her inside as well. she couldn't get to the key. what she did was she hunkered down, went int

marla tellez live at west oakland b.a.r.t. station. last time we checked in with you one person was in line waiting for a ride. any more commuters now? >> reporter: yes, within the last 60 seconds, the first chartered bus for san francisco left and there were 25 people on that bus. now there are no commuters in line and there's about eight buses i think i've counted out here waiting for commuters to arrive. i talked to a person who worked with b.a.r.t. and tell me that 51 people have left the el cerrito station, still under 100 commuters, still early on wednesday morning commute. west oakland hub is the hub for this chartered bus service. if you can't make it here directly you can go to one of four other east bay stations and then take a bus here and then take noon san francisco. that's how it works. those stations are fremont, el cerrito, walnut creek and dublin/pleasanton. now yesterday, though, the buss of service hit a serious sflag. so many commuters that the service from the stations stopped running more than an hour early. suppo
