live in san francisco, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >>> thank you, marla. now the state attorney general is dropping all charges zbens one of the suspects in a high-profile south bay murder. prosecutors say they do not have enough evidence to charge 29-year-old or a 29-year-old man. the mercury news reports that the decision comes after a public defender discovered flaws in the information, including an informant who admitted to being motivated by the $90,000 reward money and cell phone records that indicate that the suspect was not in the area at the time of the killing. also, there's dna evidence found in the getaway car that was not linked to the suspect. >>> a bay area man is now admitting he threw the punch to kill a teenager giant fan outside at&t park a few years ago. taylor buckley is pleading guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter. as part of the flee deal he'll go to jail for one year and serve five years probation. he punched anthony injure ordo back in may of 2008. he fell hitting his head on the concrete and died the next day. >>> change

marla tellez is live at las lomas high school where the boys were juniors. good morning to you, marla. >> reporter: good morning. instead of returning to school for another week rested and ready to go, it is safe to say they will be returning to campus with heavy hearts. but grief counselors will be on hand to greet them this morning to help them deal with the tragic loss of two of their classmates. as you mentioned, matthew miller and gavin powell. they were juniors at this high school. and they were best friend. and this morning autopsy results show they confirm the pair drowned to death after trying to navigate the powerful flow of a rushing creek on saturday. with all the rain we have been having, although they were warned by one of their parents not to do it, the two took an inflatable raft into a drainage canal in walnut creek. they were wearing helmets but they were not wearing life preservers. the force of the water was just too much to handle. and they were found about a mile apart from each other in concord on sunday. as fellow students head back to

"today in the bay's" marla tellez is live in fremont where the current b.a.r.t. line ends and new construction could begin. marla? >> reporter: brent, good morning. yeah, the b.a.r.t. station here in fremont just starting to wake up. it is empty right now, but i can show you there are early morning commuters making their way inside. this is the end of the line currently in the east bay, but that could soon change. this is because the federal transit administration is recommending the project get $130 million in federal fund for an extension to san jose. the recommendation alone is a huge milestone in the five-decade long quest to bring b.a.r.t. to the south bay. the ten-mile extension would run from here in fremont to the district here in san jose. it will also include a station in milpitas. this is the mass transit option for those at capital right now. before anything can happen the $130 million recommendation must pass the congressional republicans. if approved construction could begin as soon as next year in 2012 but the line would not open until 2018. and by

live in santa clara this morning, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >>> thank you, marla. 5:36 rightt teachers and school district leaders are not seeing eye to eye in new contract negotiations. they are set to meet thursday on a new three-year contract. teachers have not had a pay increase in three years and they want a raise to help cover rising health insurance costs. last week the district released a list of negotiation priorities including a salary decrease because of a huge los of funding over the past three years. the district also wants more power to evaluate and layoff teachers. >>> ac transit drivers now say that something needs to be done to protect them better on the job. after a shooting in north richmond drivers say they are often confronted with angry rider who is sometimes becoming threatening. as we reported earlier this month, somebody shot the back window of a bus at third street and grove avenue in north richmond. the union representing ac transit drivers and mechanics now plans to push for better safety standards. ac transit says it plans to put more cameras on b

marla tellez is live in palo alto with a warning from police and what you can do to avoid becoming a target marla. >> reporter: good morning. we're inside the town and country village parking lot. many of you are probably familiar with this location along el camino. it's filled with eateries and local businesses, and it's shopping center lots like this that police say these latest auto burglaries are taking place. police say specifically they are happening in the stanford shopping center parking lot and other similar lots, all along el camino, though. it's not happening when you might think it would happen. that's after hours or in the dark. it is happening in broad daylight and into the early evening hours so probably when you would least suspect something like this. these thieves know what they want. they are burglarizing cars that have lap tops, gps units and things in plain sight. police are telling you to take your lap top, gps, anything expensive, sunglasses, take it out of your car if that is feasible. if not at the least tuck it away in the trunk so it's not in plain sight. at

live in berkeley, marla tellez, today in the "bay area living." >> we have new details about what happened as a man died during a run this past weekend. firefighters who saw what happened say they were shocked and angry that nobody came to help the man after he collapsed. san francisco firefighters who happened to be running the kaiser per ma menty half marathon say the event had no medical staff or life saving equipment near the finish line at golden gate park. the firefighters tried to revive the man and claim that they waited 22 minutes for a city ambulance to arrive. they say nobody on the scene identified themselves as a medical worker. but event organizers say there were emts near the finish line and they tried to help the runner within five minutes of his collapse. the man did die. >> this morning pg&e executives say there are no other pipelines like the one in san bruno anywhere else in northern california. the "mercury news" reports that pg&e has not been able to find any other gas pipes with large sections welded together. federal investigators say faulty welds may be to blame fo

as "today in the bay's" marla tellez tells us, it is about wearing red. >> reporter: brent, i see you memo. brent, february is the american heart association's go red for women month, which means all month long you are encouraged to wear some red to shine a spotlight on heart disease. now, that is the number one killer of men and women in america. stroke is the number three cause of death in this country. and a heart attack kills a woman every single minute in the u.s. now, what's just as troubling, the heart association says only half of women they surveyed would call 911 if they thought they were having a heart attack. and many women don't even recognize several key symptoms. so today the department of health and human services is launching a first of its kind national campaign. it is called "make the call don't miss a beat." this means at the first sign of a heart attack call 911. so here's a look at the symptoms. number one, discomfort in the center of your chest which lasts more than a few minutes or that goes away and then comes back. two, general discomfort or pain in the arm,

marla tellez has a look at the prices for us. >> reporter: good morning, brent.ning to look like a no-win situation. we are at the 76 station right at the corner of brokaw and first near the san jose airport. and if you stop by to see us this morning to fill up, you are going to be paying $3.59 as the sign says behind me for regular all the way up to $3.89 for a gallon of premium. the average right now for san jose is $3.45 a gallon. that is 52 cents more than one year ago. the national average is $3.12. welsh guess what? we could be paying the dreaded $4 a gallon as soon as april. this is according to gas analysts at gasbuddy.com. the recent turmoil in the middle east is startly partly to blame. also, as i reported a few weeks ago, the valero refinery is closed for maintenance and other refineries in the bay area are also scheduled to temporarily close for similar prompts. that only drives up the price at the pump. here's a catch 22. if you are thinking about ditching the car and hopping on caltrain, for instance, to save some money, that may not be a good optio
