marla tellez is live with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this event expected to draw thousands of people. can you imagine if your home mortgage payment is cut by hundreds of dollars, even $1,000 per month or your interest rate dropped to 2% all in a day. that is the pitch here at the san jose convention center. it's called the save the dream tour. for the next six days it's in town here hosted by an organization known as the neighborhood assistance corporation of america. it claims the event gets more than half of the attendees lower mortgage payments and interest rates often on the same day. how it works is it teams up with the major lenders to approve these solutions. hundreds of staff from the loan companies are expected to be on hand here. it is a free event. it starts this morning at 8:00. and then runs through 8:00 wednesday night. so, for six days each day it's going to be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the south hall here at the san jose convention center. this is expected to draw thousands. right now you can see there is not a line.

at a fraternity house, marla tellez is live in downtown san jose. she joins us with the latest. we heard it was quite a blaze. >> reporter: actually, according to the public information officer, this has been upgraded to a four-alarm fire. mutual aid has been called in. you're going to see santa clara firefighters as well, about 90 of them. and allen is giving you a live look at a couple of ladders active spraying down. you can see all of the smoke billowing from this building. we're on south 11th street. it's the kappa sigma fraternity house. all of the streets in the area are closed off. the 35 frat member who is live here, they are all evacuated this morning, they are on the corner. you're getting a look at them now. all of these gentlemen here, all fine as you can see. but the unfortunate news is one firefighter has been taken off the fire because he burned his hand. minor injuries to his hand so. a little better news there no. serious injuries for that firefighter. his colleagues here fighting this fire the best they can. they are in the defensive mode and we're going to st

marla tellez is live to tell us more. >> good morning. it is 6:07 now. an attack killed five u.s. military service members in iraq. it happened in baghdad. iraqi security officials are saying it was due to a rocket attack on a base in eastern baghdad. the americans killed were at the base as advisers. it's the single biggest loss of lives since 2009. >>> fine ral services for the two san francisco firefighters who died in the line of duty will be held fri. a 21 year veteran of the department. anthony died saturday, two days after the fire. he was a 14-year veteran at the department. they were fighting a house fire when experts say a flashover hit them. it's when a fire reaches temperatures of over 1,000 degrees. now the funerals will be held at st. mary's cathedral on friday. the fire department expects thousands of firefighters from around the bay area and beyond to attend. >> no doubt. it's a brotherhood. it is. it's such a big loss. thank you very much. >>> pg&e tested sections of pipelines in the city of newark over the weekend. the pipes were installed back in 1949. pg&e is t

marla tellez is live in hayward, joining us with the very latest. marla. >> reporter: good morning, laura. seven days have already passed, and today hayward police are expected to hold a press conference here at police headquarters in hayward to give an update on their search for missing nursing student michelle lei. so far, investigators are saying they did not find anything significant when they followed up on what they were calling a potential break in this case. yesterday's s.w.a.t. team searched the niles canyon area, which is where lei's cell phone last pinged on saturday. a ping happens when a phone communicates with a nearby cell tower. so this means her phone was in that area at some point, but, again, investigators say they did not find anything of significance. lei disappeared a week ago during her rounds at kaiser hospital in hayward, where she was last seen heading to a parking garage. her locked honda suv was later found a few blocks away in a neighborhood cul-de-sac. tonight family and friends are going to be holding a candlelight vig

i'm marla tellez. san jose unions are telling city leaders they want to talk about reforming their pensions now. damian trujillo is live in san jose. the union is arguing the city put the talks on hold so they are getting creative. >> reporter: they are. they parked this rv behind me across from city hall, telling city leaders, walk across the street and let's talk pension reform now. the labor groups say they met with city leaders on friday. the city told them, they will have to hold off on talks until they can come with ballot language on the reforms. they voted to put a reform on the ballot. the unions say why wait? let's talk reform right here, right now. >> this rv invites them to come across the street and begin negotiations at our table. we are 150 steps from the front door. >> reporter: these are unions representing ark techs, enginee engineers, maintenance supervisors. they are facing a $115 million deficit and more red ink is expected in two or three years. >> thank you. >>> now, we are going

marla tellez has an update this morning on both.d morning. >> reporter: yeah, we're going to start in alameda and a tragedy that has captured national attention. alameda's mayor is calling for an independent review of the circumstances surrounding the drowning of a 52-year-old man on memorial day. now, some alameda residents lashed out at the mayor and city council last night, angry over last week's drowning of raymond zack. on may 31st he walked into the water at robert crown state beach. the fire department came, but firefighters did not go in. a private citizen pulled the body from the water instead. the city relies on the coast guard for water rescues but the water was just too shallow that day for the boat. >> i've heard not one of you and not one officer say that this should not have happened. >> if it's a police matter, why didn't they bring in a negotiator? why did they try not to communicate with this gentleman? >> reporter: two years ago alameda put its water rescue program on hold. fire department officials say firefighte

marla tellez has more on that. >> certainly never a good thing to end up on the wrong side of the law. good morning, laura. he's a former san francisco police officer. prosecutors say paul allegedly received bribes from taxi driver applicants. he took $100 over a two-year period. the 36-year veteran was in charge of grading written exams. he would give passing tests. they were arrested last november. >>> in oakland, three suspects will stand trial for home invasion robberies. a superior court judge ruled yesterday there was sufficient evidence to try the group for robbing 25 homes. two suspects, 24 and 21-year-old man and woman are from the bay area. the other is a 25-year-old man from stockton. they have been charged on 79 felony counts including 49 home invasion robbery accounts. it took place over an eight month period in oakland. they believe the suspects charged asian immigrants. >>> the 17-year-old boy accused of shooting a family and killing a 3-month-old baby will be tried as an adult. he made his first court appearance yesterday. he did not enter a plea. the parents were in t

marla tellez is live in the news room with an update. >>> a wildfire is burning near bakersfield.more than 350 acres have burned so far in kern county, east of bakersfield. a couple nearby communities have been evacuated including dutch john flats. predicted thunderstorms are feared because hundreds of abandoned gold mines are in that area. the key fire, as it's been named is 10% contained. in arizona, a huge wildfire could grow because of a windy forecast and expected lightning storm. there's no containment on the fire near the new mexico border. so far, it's burned 184,000 acres and forced the evacuation of 2200 people. authorities ordered more residents to evacuate yesterday. 1300 firefighters are fighting the flames. it's deemed the third largest fire in history. it's coming as far from oregon and new york. i was in new mexico over the weekend and that smoke made its way there. >> zero containment so far. >> scary. >> up against a lot there. thank you for the update. >>> this morning, several city union representatives are camped across from city hall ready to discuss pension

today in the bay's marla tellez is live in san francisco, all waiting for the ruling. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the future of prop 8 right now unknown but it should be known in a matter of hours. it was here at the federal court house a year ago that judge vaughn walker, he heard final arguments in the prop 8 case. a couple months later ruled the law was unconstitutional. this morning his ruling could be thrown out by the chief u.s. district judge james ware who is deciding if the walker ruling should be overturned because walker didn't disclose the fact that he's gay. months after walker ruled against the law which prevents same-sex marriage he retired and then revealed he had been in a relationship with a man for the last ten years. prop 8 supporters decided to fight his ruling saying he should have re accused himself from the case. >> no man can be a judge in his own case, and no man is permitted to try cases where they have an interest in the outcome. against the backdrop of these bedrock principles it is clear that the ruling of judge walker must be

marla tellez is live with an update. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. this story is one that everyone seems to have an opinion about. it was yesterday morning that when 20-year-old deshon marman had made his way through a security checkpoint like the one you see here, he was successful in going through security. it was after he boarded u.s. airways flight bound for albuquerque when he was arrested for refusing to pull up his sagging pants. he is from san francisco where his mom lives but he plays football for the university of new mexico. his mother tells us he was asked by employees to pull up his pants before boarding the plane. he said he couldn't because his hands were full. so after getting situated on the plane, he did as he was told and pulled up his pants. by then the pilot had ordered everyone off of the plane and marman was taken into custody for trespassing, battery and resisting arrest. his mother says her son was stereotyped and the airline owes him an apology. >> i want them to take this off of my son's record. >> i think they owe him an a

"today in the bay's"'s christie smith is live near the cliff house with the very latest. good morning, christie. >> good morning to you, marla. in about 30 minutes the coast guard is expected to do a fly-over and see if there's any diesel fuel in the water. the boat was filled with 800 gallons, a 49 foot commercial fishing boat that capsized near san francisco tossing three men bought cold water. the coast guard saying they rescued them, had them out in under 30 minutes. one man on board said that he believes that because the boat was loaded with crab pots and some of the weight shifted, he believes that may be the cause of why it caps
