"today in the bay's" marla tellez is live in los gatos with what the store owner is saying. good morning, marla. >> reporter: laura, good morning. the attorney for owner robert chang says that his client has been forced to take extra security precautions and that includes notifying police here in los gatos and police in san jose where he was actually threatened. templar sports opened back in december. this has been a big story. it's considered a sporting goods store but because it sells guns, it attracted heat from hundreds of people who live here. just this past monday, hundreds turned out for a town council meeting where they demanded a business move or shut down all together. the next night on tuesday night if owner robert chang received a letter at his home in san jose that included a death threat. now his attorney is worried about the next town council meeting where chang will be questioned once again. that special meeting is scheduled for this coming monday. >> i suggested that they delay monday's meeting. that would give the chief an opportunity and los gatos police de

"today in the bay's" marla tellez is live at the airport with the airline moving in and flights that are welcome news for business travelers. when are we taking off, marla? >> reporter: may 1st, laura. virgin america will start service here. it's great here for business travelers who have more options now for those people who need to make the quick getaway out of silicon valley. great news for them. virgin america is headquartered right up the road in burlingame is expected to announce today it will begin offering flights from sjc to los angeles with four trips daily. virgin america if you have never flown it before is known for low fares mixed with fancy amenities including in-flight wi-fi and mo moonlit cabins. it will have to fight for passengers against southwest, american, alaska and united. passengers we spoke to today say they are happy to hear the news. >> it's encouraging. great airline. treats customers as well. they are coming out of san jose and that's exciting. >> it's great. a quick trip. just one shot and everything. that will be wonderful. that's good. that's good. >>

"today in the bay's" marla tellez is live on the scene on monterey road and bellevue avenue with more on what happened out there. good morning, marla. >> reporter: laura, good morning. you can see it's a very active scene. crime scene investigators behind us on monterey road near bellevue avenue where this all happened. you can see the crime scene markers still out here. they're picking them up doing their thing. they say a woman was crossing the street near monterey road and bellevue avenue when she was hit by a dark colored vehicle. so far no information is being released about the driver or the woman who was killed other than this person, the driver did not stop and just kept going. now police say it happened about 1:00 this morning. you can see a look at monterey road a portion of it is shut d

"today in the bay's" marla tellez is the first reporter on the scene of that crash south of downtown just blocks from the municipal baseball stadium. marla, what's happening out there? >> reporter: i can tell you it's still a very active scene that's happened just about five hours ago and plenty of san jose police on scene including sergeant gray conley who joins us live to explain to us what happened. we do understand that a woman was attempting to cross monterey road at bellevue avenue when she was struck and killed about 1:00 this morning. what information do you have to go on? >> we had a couple of witnesses that were out here that witnessed the collision. they said it was a dark colored vehicle, possibly a honda and it has severe front end damage. >> reporter: caused from the impact of hitting the woman? >> correct. >> reporter: so what else can you tell us? how do you come to an end to this investigation? >> the evidence that we collect up off the street, the statements that we gather and any kind of film footage that we'll get from any cameras on the street here will lead hopef

marla tellez joins us live from the newsroom with developments from south africa.ave been closely monitoring everything going on. >> right now bail conditions are being outlined in that south african courtroom. i'm hearing from one of our nbc news reporters who is inside that courtroom that he's tweeting out the bail conditions. the suggested bail is 250,000 which equates to about 28,000 u.s. dollars. also pistorius will need to report to police between 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. every monday through friday. so far that's what we're hearing about the bail conditions. those are still being worked out. ultimately the magistrate explained he doesn't think that pistorius is a flight risk. he doesn't think he'll commit violence or interfere with the case while out on bond. after more than a week in jail, oscar pistorius is going to be a free man. pending of course his trial in the shooting death of his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. the prosecution fought hard to keep pistorius locked up convinced he will flee. the magistrate doesn't think he'll risk what he has left referri

"today in the bay's" marla tellez is in our newsroom with the overnight developments in that case. good morning, marla. >> reporter: good morning. a few things happened overnight. first off, officers were hopeful that tracks surrounding his burned out truck would lead them to him but the tracks turned up nothing. the search for christopher dorner has ultimately narrowed to the snowy mountains around bear mountain ski resort. this is about 80 miles east of l.a. the same vicinity where his burned out truck was found. also new overnight, another vehicle linked to him was found overnight in san diego. so officials are fingerprinting that vehicle looking for a match to dorner. as for the los angeles police department specifically, it's important to note that although dorner's 11-page manifesto names 40 officers from the force who he plans to target. officials say at this point the entire department which makes pup 10,000 officers is considered a target so lapd is beefing up its security in and around its headquarters in downtown l.a. and also around individual officers. this is a fluid s

"today in the bay's" marla tellez live in san francisco with what the president may do and what it could mean for california. good morning, marla. >> reporter: good morning. for one it could mean wedding planners would have a lot more business not just here in california but potentially in the 29 other states that currently ban gay marriage. it was in san francisco in 2010 when that federal judge who happened to be gay himself declared prop 8 unconstitutional and the california supreme court agreed. now since then the initiative that defines marriage as a male/female union in the state of california has been paralyzed tangled in a legal web. now the president is thinking about weighing in on the debate before the u.s. supreme court takes up the issue next month on march 26th. his administration says the president is now considering urging the high court to overturn prop 8. the president, a known support of gay marriage, says that gays and lesbians must be treated like everyone else under the law. the obama administration has until february 28th to file a friend of the court brief. if he

"today in the bay's" marla tellez following the very latest for us in the case. she joins us from our newsroom. marla? >> reporter: good morning. over the weekend we heard l.a.'s police chief call christopher dorner a domestic terrorist and as such authorities are not taking any chances which is one of the reasons why the department is now offering a $1 million reward for his arrest and conviction. the latest surveillance video of who is believed to be the 33 year old shows him dumping a gun belt, helmet, uniform and ammunition into a dumpster outside a sporting good store in san diego. this video captured exactly one week ago. the morning after dorner is accused of shooting and killing his first two victims in orange county. ultimately the search for dorner continues to focus outside of l.a. in the snowy mountains of big bear where his burned out truck was found last week. some new developments. police say they found a cache of weapons and camping gear in that truck. today police say some 50 lapd families continue to be guarded closely. they are the listed target

marla tellez has the latest on the immigration controversy. good morning. >> the leak comes as a small group of democrats and republicans are working behind the scenes on a compromise immigration bill set to be unveiled next month. the details of this much different white house plan were leaked to "usa today" over the weekend. it would immediately protect 11 million illegal immigrants and allow them to become citizens within eight years. it does not, however, guarantee ramped up border security first and foremost which is what republicans want and why they are now so upset over the leaked plan. as you're about to hear, the obama administration says it's nothing more than a backup plan in case current efforts fall apart. some republicans are not buying it and insist the leak was absolutely intentional. >> this is the president torpedoing his own plan and shows me he's not serious. >> if those do not work out, we'll have an option ready to put out there. >> the gdp says the white house proposal would be dead on arrival if it came up for a vote t

"today in the bay's" marla tellez is live by the casino with more details on the suit and why the city is refusing to open that top floor. marla, good morning. >> reporter: jon, good morning. ultimately it was outgoing san jose police chief chris moore who made that final decision to not allow casino matrix here to open up its top floor to the high stakes gambling. he made this decision last month citing safety concerns. not too sure about the casino's ability to safely monitor the activity that would happen upstairs on the eighth floor. now, as we reported in january, it was san jose's gaming commission that recommended the denial in the first place. now the casino matrix is challenging the city of san jose slapping it with a lawsuit that cites a conflict of interest. the suit was filed in santa clara county superior court and in federal court in san jose just yesterday and it alleges the gaming division's administrator admitted under oath in an unrelated case that he does consulting work for other indian casinos, commercial casinos and racetracks. we spoke to a casino representative

"today in the bay's" marla tellez joins us live from outsiour newsroom this morning. difficult for the families this morning. >> the reality star was laid to rest this morning in port elizabeth. her coffin was draped in a white cloth covered in white flowers as it was carried away. her family says family and friends traveled from all over the world to make it to this morning's memorial service. meantime, hundreds of miles north her boyfriend, oscar pistorius, once revered star sat and cried throughout his bail hearings. at times they had to stop the proceedings and ask if he was okay. steenkamp's best friend releasing a statement in court saying reeva and oscar had nothing but love for each other. the prosecution was out to prove otherwise arguing pistorius shot and killed steenkamp in an act of premeditated murder. they argued pistorius fired through a bathroom door where she was hiding after they got into an argument. the defense says pistorius thought she was a robber and s mistakenly shot her three times. his team says he felt vulnerable because he didn't have on

marla tellez joins us now. >> reporter: one of the detectives agreed saying pistorius would risk fleeing despite his celebrity. the comment made his friends laugh out loud. one can only assume because they absolutely don't agree. the police officer said he found a box of testosterone and needles inside the bedroom but they say it is nothing more than an herbal remedy. the prosecution showed it as trying to under mine what happened that night. it seems shots were fired down. the story has not changed. he said he accidentally shot his girlfriend thinking she was an intruder in the bathroom. >> another big take away, a prosecution witness testified they heard a woman screaming at t the home and gunshots and then more screaming. nuz that witness was about 600 meters away. well, it's almost a half mile. we'll go live to south africa where michigan cosmetic has been inside the courtroom and will give us a sense of pistorius's state of mind today. >> we have seen it all including snow on mountain tops including hamilton and mount diablo. >> and people are pelted with hail. you can see the video

marla tellez has the newest courtroom developments. good morning. >> day two of oscar pistorius's bail hearing brought more tears. for the first time laughter from the courtroom. one of the nbc news correspondents who is covering the hearing tweeted the following. quote, laughter from friends of pistorius as botha claims miss tore use would risk fleeing south africa despite his celebrity. botha was one of the first responders to the scene when pistorius's girlfriend was shot. the officer considers him a flight risk, arguing he should not be freed on bond. this is what made his friends laugh. one can only assume because they don't think miss tore use would run from authorities. the headlines came from a prosecution witness who says this person heard a woman screaming at the home and then gunshots and then more screaming the morning she was killed. according to an investigator that witness was about 600 meters away when they heard all that. that's almost a half mile. the hear aing today lasted about six hours. once again pistorius was sa
