i want to bring in cnn's miguel marquez. you're in carolina beach. are using every minute that they have left to prep for this storm. >> they are indeed, and it is upon us. the waves are getting bigger of the they have been getting bigger throughout the day. it's low tide right now, but they are just growing in size and intensity. they are coming very, very fast now. the water -- we're getting another big pulse of rain right now and what they are preparing for is for that long onslaught of rain. the rain and a storm surge that they expect will cut off much of this town, perhaps flooding as much as a third of this town making it impossible to get out of this town or into this town for as long as five to seven days. there's also a nuclear power plant nearby, the brunswick nuclear power plant that duke energy has taken the steps to shut down. two power units that they are shutting down ahead of what's expected to be winds in excess of 75 miles per hour sustained. jake? >> miguel marquez in carolina beach, north carolina, as they brace for the storm. mom

miguel marquez is in carolina beach, north carolina for us. miguel, we saw the earlier bands coming through. the beginnings of the bands. i note you're not far from this brunswick nuclear plant they're keeping a close eye on. >> there are two units, they expect those winds to hit 75 miles of sustained winds. we are moving toward that. we're about a half hour southeast of where anderson is right now where they're not seeing too much rain here. the rain has been coming down very subtly. the wind is starting to pick up and become more steady. that's the big thing. you get a lot of those gusts from time to time. but that sustained wind, once you -- it's like a sideways waterfall coming at you basically. that's when it becomes very, very difficult to operate in these conditions. that's when it's difficult for first responders to respond to anybody who may be in trouble there. the town manager says maybe around 600 people have decided to wait out the storm. the waves have been building all day. the rain is coming down much harder. and the wind is st

all right, miguel marquez, stay safe. >> brian todd is elsewhere in wilmington. he's been driving around looking at damage, trees down, water on the ground. where are you and what are you seeing? >> anderson, we're in the wrightsboro neighborhood of wilmington, north of downtown wilmington, getting our first real survey of the really severe damage that's being suffered by some of these narnds. you can see this downed power line is not quite snapped off but a really dangerous situation here. look at the tree down in this yard. power lines down all over the place. as you can see, this storm is still whipping through here. it's still a very dangerous situation for some of these residents. we were told just a short time ago by wilmington city officials that they have had calls, mostly from people who are in need of help because of trees falling on their houses. you can see behind me, a photojournalist can pan down to this tree way down here. completely across the road, so access to this road is blocked. again, this is some of what first responders are having to deal

let's check in now with miguel marquez up in north carolina, carolina beach.very tough there. a lot of flooding. miguel, what is the latest? >> we saw the exact -- the exact process you are talking about there, we saw today in action. where the water very quickly during high tide came up to about waist high on me in an area that often floods but certainly not that quickly. i thought you would come to us now and i would say, well, chris, the rain has stopped but it had for about 20 minutes and now it is back in full force. it is just dumping it down here again. the wind maybe let off for a little while but right back up to where it was before. it is just incredible how slow this storm is moving and how much power, despite being either a category one or now a tropical storm, how much power florence is packing. authorities here very concerned about the aftermath tomorrow and getting in there to try to figure out where the damage is. some roofs have been ripped off and some walls have come down but for most part things are good in carolina beach, as good as they c

miguel marquez joins us now. what stood out to you today, miguel?ter: yeah, it is only going to get more dangerous. we flew over the area south of raleigh today and the expanse of it. i was about a mile west of where we flew over today, a little town called wallace, north carolina. today we are about a mile and a half east of there. it's all water. it's a massive lake. i-40 itself, this major freeway that cuts through the state is now, part of it, at least, a major lake. it's incredible to see houses with water up to the rafters, chicken farms, hog farms, electric substations. it just -- it is devastating, the amount of water out there. this alone would cause a state to shudder and to have a hard time recovering from. and the problem is, what we're seeing right now is only the beginning. starting tomorrow, the rivers, the river that's feeding a lot of this, the cape fear river, but all its tributaries and all the creeks and everything else that feeds into it from the long creek to the black river to the new river, all of them are going to start to g
