they ran into the courtyard marriott hotel. police are telling us through the main lobby, they lost sight of him. a live look from chopper 5, after losing sight of that individual, we are told that the suspect attempted to run out of the back of the marriott hotel. that's when one richmond police officer fired one shot at the suspect. we are told that the suspect is 22 years old. we're not being told if he is local. we're also not being told if that individual brandished that weapon at the police officer prior to the shooting but again, that shooting happened in the back of the courtyard marriott hotel, one shot. that suspect is apparently suffering from nonlife- threatening injuries. he is expected to survive. police are telling us that it is believed that initially at that extended stay hotel, there was some kind of argument between the suspect and one of the employees. we're going to stay on scene and gather more information and bring it to you as it becomes available. for now, that's the latest live from richmond. elizabeth

it all took place in the courtyard marriott hotel right behind me. now, to give you some perspective, bloom drive where it intersections with hilltop drive is closed to southbound traffic because just above the intersection is the scene of the shooting, a parking lot outside the marriott hotel. what led to the richmond officer opening fire? it appears to be an argument at the extended stay hotel two doors down. police say that is where the shooting victim a 22-year-old man entered the lobby with a handgun in his waistband. that extended stay hotel employee says he grabbed the gun in that verbal dispute and that employee dialed 911. police say the still unidentified man bolted from that hotel jumping a fence at the nearby social security administration then dashed into the main entrance of the marriott courtyard hotel where police lost sight of him for several minutes. he then reappeared in the parking lot and that's when one officer opened fire. >> at this time, we have called the district attorney's office. they will be doing a parallel investigatio

the tunnels down there, and i saw photographs of tunnels with walls as smooth as they are in the marriott, lined with lighting and air conditioning. and it was clear to me that that was about a business that is making a lot of money through the trafficking of guns and drugs and human beings. i saw evidence of the seriousness of the threat to public safety when we look at the cartels and how highly arguized and efficient they have been in committing crimes that are running right up the i-5. i have seen it when we were part of an operation that ended up in the arrest warrants for 101 gang members. so it is a serious issue. but it is in that way something that we need to approach understanding it is not monolithic. and in a way of understanding that we can and have a responsibility, all of us, be communitied leaders, social workers, teachers, police officers or prosecutors, we all have a role to play in addressing this issue in a way that i believe and know we can make a difference. i will close by just saying that we are facing obviously many changes, but i think we are all here because we
