the northern areas of marseilles are infamous for crime and poverty. many residents are third -- second or third generation immigrants. >> this is huge. i am disappointed and worried. the people like us who voted for the nationalist front, people have had enough. we will be in trouble for the next six years. >> [no audio] >> we need to get rid of all these taxes. they are choking us. we are done for. is the city's biggest with 150,000 inhabitants. victory their hands the far right party more influence than it has ever had before on the local council. while it is a symbolic victory, a breakthrough for the far right party, it will be hard to use as a yardstick for future credibility. we have more on this story. >> the causes of the national front's success in france's local elections, what will some of the results of that success be? >> that's an interesting question. it is hard to know. they have had control of a few cities in 1995. the consequences were quite disastrous for them. there were a lot of problems. it will be interesting to see how it does.

let's dig deeper now with chris mcglocklin at marseilles. >> reporter: the malaysian government made the announcement today that the plane went down in the indian ocean. how confidence is the company that that is what happened to 370 that it ended in the water. >> very reluctantly, we've been looking at the ping data for the last six or serven days, comparing it with other malaysian airlines, triple 777 in the region and looking at the flight data we can get from the pings. we mapped those pings against the southern and northern route. i can say there's a strong correlation with the southern route, and absolutely no correlation with the north, that it went south. >> you can rule out that northern route? >> yes. >> can you say, though, that with 100% certainty, that the plane ended up in the water? >> we have to bow to the honors that the investigation team has. we can say that we saw the plane in a number of pings to the network, the period of hours cone sides with the amount of time the malaysians say it was fueled up for, and that would tie in with some seven pings or communication

in marseille, the national front pushed the socialist candidate into third place. least,as some solace, at for the socialists here in paris. their candidate looks set to become the city's next mayor. and run by the socialist of the past 12 years with the widely appreciated result but it is not all rosy. like she'll beat her conservative ump arrival but her candidate, known by initials, actually scored much better than expected. >> parisians have remained true to their roots. they have defied the polls and place myself in the ump party after this first round of voting. i want to reach out to all of those who want to keep building a strong paris, although we should -- we share the same values of the republic and progress. vote is on all the front pages. >> a historic success for the far right and a blow to the socialists. look at the front page of the left wing paper. how do you take that? -- a bitrmist herefear alarmist. fear in france. watch out, france. beware, the french party national front, the far right party, could be taking over. >> what about the right wing
