joining us now is patrick marsh, the warning coordination meteorologist at the national weather service right, patrick. let's talk about this almost unprecedented 13-day stretch. what is fuelling this tornadic activity? >> good morning. thank you for having me. what's causing this unprecedented record-breaking stretch of tornadic activity in the central united states, there are two pieces to it. one, the big high pressure across, the bermuda high bringing record heat to the southeast. the flow around the high is bringing copious amounts of moisture into the central part of the united states. so that's sitting here just ready for something to tap into it. across the rocky mountains we have unseasonably cold trough bringing snows to the rockies. the flow around that is bringing wind shear and ascent into the central part of the united states. when you have a lot of moisture, ascent, wind shear you have the recipe for a lot of thunderstorms. the fact that these two things are sitting in place not moving has led to day after day of thunderstorms. >> let's look at the numbers here. in 2016,
