peter: marsha blackburn is the subcommitteehouse on energy and technology. the house of representatives called for a vote and chairman blackburn had to leave a few minutes early, but we kept lydia onoud around to put a period the conversation we had with her. the subcommittee she is chairing -- are they pursuing a lot of different avenues when it comes to tech policy? think the congressman described quite a bit of activity in terms of individual members and their offices looking at really important issues -- cyber security, privacy. in terms of legislation, she fbctioned the ntia and reauthorizations, and those are important for the industry, but i do not know how much legislation we will see when all of congress right now is focused .n health care and taxation maybe the next thing we see will be the infrastructure bill we discussed, which will be very sectornt for the telecom . after that is what happens with net neutrality. will there be legislation? won't there be legislation? with that privacy bill, will that add pressure to the situation? perhaps. she i

marsha blackburn a few days ago introduced a bill that deals with privacy so one thing it does that would have the effect of doing is relocating or locating the authority to regulate privacy with the ftc or the internet players. let's assume you think that is a good thing but another thing that the bill does is it requires out in rather than opt out for activities that are assumed to be sensitive like web browsing and apps usage, history, things that the ftc has not considered to opt in and i think perhaps several of you, i am not sure, you can let us know, previously ahead of objections to opting in for that information. that is what i want to focus on, not the equality of treatment but specifically whether or not you agree with the opt in requirement and chairman blackburn's proposed bill. >> let's break it down and talk about where that came from. where all of that came from, chairwoman blackburn's bill, was i thought a disinformation campaign that happened after congress did the cr and donald trump signed into law, eliminating the privacy order that the fcc had enacted and the disinfo

. >>> tonight on "the communicators," tennessee representative marsha blackburn, the in you chair of the key house subcommittee on communications and technology, talks about the fcc vote to change internet regulation rules and congress' efforts to change internet privacy rules. miss blackburn is interviewed by event driven's tech and media telecom reporter, lydia beyoud. >> can you tell us a little bit about the bill and also what drove you to introduce it? >> people are ready to see something come forward from us on the issues of privacy and on data security. and certainly now we're beginning to have not only states but cities look at privacy regulation and they're doing it because the federal government, because congress, has not taken an action. and now that the privacy issue will not have two regulators, which is a good thing, we're going to have one. and the ftc has historically been the regulator of privacy in both the physical space and the virtual space. and we think it's important to have one set of rules for the entire ecosystem, and one regulator for the entire ecosystem.
