the san jose fire department is mourning the loss of captain jose martinez. recently promoted and the father of new twin girls, martinez succumbed to a rare and aggressive form of cancer. nbc bay area's george kiriyama is live in san jose with more. george? >> reporter: it's a tough time for the san jose fire department. this is station 12, where captain jose martinez worked his last shift in late may. martinez was an 11-year veteran here in san jose, almost 20 years total fighting fires. his death from cancer is quite shocking because it happened so quickly. >> of course very sad. we think about him every day. >> reporter: 2012 had been a good year for san jose firefighter jose martinez. in march he was promoted to captain. his wife, melissa, proudly pinned his badge to his jacket. but then in june his health took a turn for the worst, and on june 19th the shocking news. captain martinez was told he had a rare form of cancer called synovial sar colma, a soft tissue cancer near the joints of the arm, neck, or leg. >> i thought he was going to defeat it, and w
