president obama is kicking off his 10-day vacation in martha's vineyard. he's facing a lot of criticism for the trip in the wake of the market turmoil and concerns about the struggling economy. the white house says the president won't be relaxing the whole time. he will be working with his economic staff on an economic policy he'll be unveiling in september. he decided to skip a couple of fundraisers on the island head by debbie wasserman-schultz. another tsunami scare from an earthquake that rattled northeastern coast of japan a short time ago. the quake's preliminary magnitude 6.8 and a tsunami advisory for the area has been lifted. japan's meteorological society said it struck south of where a massive magnitude 9.0 quake hit back in march. president obama has called on syrian president assad to step down. the u.s. joining the european union in demanding an end to the four decades of brutal family dictatorship in syria. u.n. investigators say assad's forces have killed at least 1900 civilians in what they're calling possible crimes against humanity. assa

and abc's martha raddatz joins us now, from washington, with the latest. martha?: good morning, ron. it was a chinook helicopter. and onboard, abc news has learned from a u.s. senior military official, there were 25 navy s.e.a.l.s, 7 afghan forces, 1 interpreter, the 5-member crew of the u.s. helicopter and 1 dog. the troops were apparently involved in some sort of raid or operation in wardak province in afghanistan, when the helicopter apparently was shot down. they are not confirming it was shot down. of course, they will do an investigation. but it was involved in the operations at the time. of course, this is devastating news for the u.s. special operations community. in fact, it was harmid karzai, the president of afghanistan, who first released the statement saying it was u.s. special forces. ron? >> okay. thanks very much, martha, on that downing of the nato helicopter. 38 people onboard killed. >>> the nation's credit rating has been lowered for the first time. standard & poor's, one of the three major credit rating agencies, saying the u.s. debt is no lon

anointed one is off to a lavish vacation in martha's vineyard. will real americans think this is a good idea? on the third and final leg of his taxpayer funded campaign journey through the midwest president obama began to vaguely shine some of the light on the economic plan he will unveil when he returns from miss martha's vineyard vacation. today he said measures include aimed at creating jobs. he will propose to the congressional leaders in super committee more tan 1.5 trillion in budget cuts. how? all you have to do is read his lips. it sounds like tax hikes are back. >> the president: if you have a deal that does not have revenue in it, and you still want to close the deficit by say four trillion, if you have no revenue the only way to do that you have to drastically cut. there's no two ways about it. you have to drasticly cut medicare. you have to drastically cut medicaid. you have to cut back on education support in significant ways that affect school kids right here and across the country. >> sean: here's the translation, if you allow him

i think this is his third visit to martha's vineyard since his administration, he goes every summer, sure they're also hearing why is he waiting until after labor day to make this jobs announcement, when you do have an economy that's really teetering and the numbers on the dow just demonstrate that, put a fine point on it. >> reporter: that's right. you have a lot of particularly republican presidential candidate mitt romney came out and said why are we waiting. michele bachmann, who questioned the timing. white house officials saying look, he needs to work on this jobs plan and then present it to people. of course, congress is also on vacation right now. so there have been some questions about timing, you're absolutely right. and as you mentioned, presidents do get critiqued from time to time for going on vacation because often there are difficult things going on in the country, people want to know why are they taking a break. white house officials are saying he will be hard at work on this jobs plan while here on martha's vineyard. >> on the shallow side, do you have any idea what

so joining me from martha's vineyard, nbc's kristin welker.thank you for joining me. >> nice to be here. thank you. >> what is the president going to be up to on this vacation? what does the schedule look like for president obama? >> well, according to white house officials, all of the amenities of the office really do travel with the president. so that means his communication equipment, his transportation that he needs, that means that he can be in contact with world leaders at a moment's notice. and as you heard jay carney say there, he will be in constant contact with his national security team as well as his economic team. so this really will be in part of a working vacation, according to white house officials. and from the perspective of a reporter covering this story, we will have briefings throughout this 10-day trip. it's not your typical vacation, melissa. having said that, there will be some downtime, some fun time with his family. just this evening, one white house official said, look, he is a father, he is a husband. he deserves so

megyn: there is the inevitable, should he be going off to martha's vineyard?look at numbers and you look at polls, there is a question about whether the average american or the 15 million out of work or only part time employed will look at him and say i don't think this is right. i think he should be back in d.c. trying to find me a job. >> reporter: i think it's a perception issue. the white house is trying to push back saying the presidency travels with the president. but it's an image issue, especially when you have the market reacting the what it is. president clinton heading towards reelection chose not to go to martha's vineyard because of the image it would send. instead he vacations in which, i think that was at the recommendation of consultant dick morris. he won reelection and returned to martha's vineyard after winning the election. megyn: what many wrong with the vineyard? it's a lovely place. so i have heard. i have never been. >> reporter: the president doesn't apparently care. megyn: i read that dick morris later regretted taking polls on where
