our last one, our army representative, is martha putney. of the first 40 women, african-american women to join a women's army auxiliary corps. they traveled to fort des moines effort on theeat part of a civil rights activist as well, especially with the support -- as well as with the support of the first lady eleanor roosevelt. african-americans were allowed to be part of the military and martha putney was one of them. the story she told about what she endured and what these women entered. they were segregated. with a used the pool, it was cleaned after they had a swim. german pow's were permitted to club, african-american officers were not. the african-american women formed a band and the army decided they didn't want the band. i think martha reached out to those folks who helped her so , as well as eleanor roosevelt, because eventually eleanor roosevelt intervened and they were able to have a band. she used the g.i. bill when she got out of the army to get her phd. and was a at howard senior fellow at howard and various schools on the eas
