martha jean never planned on -- martha jean never planned on going into radio. radio with segregated back when she was growing up, nobody would have hired her, except for a performer. black singers were hired. in the south, they had to came through the back door, but welcome to the world under segregation. she did not want to be a singer. she wanted to be a nurse, but there were not a lot of black schools that taught nursing. unfortunately there were a lot -- there were not a lot of options. she decided to become a model. by some accounts she did studying -- study nursing, but modeling was more of a possibility. fortunately for her the industry is starting to change by the 1940's when she is growing up. the first black formatted radio station goes on the air in 1948 in memphis. it is owned by white people but it's the first station to have an all-black format, martha jean sees a possibility. she knows about fascism and a -- she knows about fashion and a whole bunch of other stuff. she auditions and she gets the gig. she has a really nice voice. she wins a contes

martha was a regular there. i've always believed that you can tell a lot about somebody by the work ethic that they bring when they are approaching physical exercise, something that i saw growing up with my dad. he was a world war ii fighter pilot who embodied the iew millionty and quiet -- humility and quiet service that characterized the greatest generation and those traits carried over into his approach to sports. he was a basketball and track coach when i was growing up. prior to that most valuable player for the university of minnesota basketball team back in 1941. and he approached everything with humility and service. those were the values that he emtake sietzed -- emphasized the most. your job as a member of the team was to make the team better, not to make yourself look good. and if your team needed you to make a basket then great but if the team needed you to make that extra pass so that someone else could make the shot, then that's what you did. that's the way that my dad taught us, the way that he co
