martha? >> the big question now, how does the military evacuate the remaining people while avoiding another catastrophe in the final hours? >> reporter: this mission was already difficult and dangerous, the president said as much. it's just become more so as the days have gone on. the fewer troops there, the more difficult it is to conduct the mission. they said they plan to continue to get people out. i've been speaking to someone familiar with the operation. he's saying they're getting buses in to the base. u.s. passport holders, siv applicants, but the process is still ongoing. the key question for anyone who spent time in afghanistan, the afghans themselves, what happens when all the troops leave? the taliban said they'll help facilitate siv applicants, but there's no clear plan. >> thanks very much, ian. >>> the biden administration. has been racing to evacuate the remaining americans seeking to leave afghanistan before tuesday's deadline amid those continued warnings about the security

martha? >> martha: another quick question. given the on going threat, why is it the posture is the same in terms of the number of people that we have on the ground and the resources that we're taking advantage of at this point? >> i don't think the posture remains the same in terms of security measures. there's many things that they are doing at the airport that they don't want to talk about because they don't want to give it away to any potential attackers. the posture is not exactly the same. in terms of numbers of troops on the ground, kirby said today that he would not be giving updates on the number of u.s. troops at the airport. it's clear they're doing two very difficult things at the same time. they're trying to get maximum number of americans and sivs and needy afghans on the planes and as of yesterday, they got 12,500 out after a suicide bombing that killed 13 americans. they're trying to do that while retrograding. so they're destroying equipment, moving out some unneeded forces. but you can't draw down completely u

>> that's the question, martha. we know, of course, this is one of the biggest debacles we've seen in the last several decades. the fact that we had to evacuate our embassy, the heart and soul of our activities and vetting process, all of that has been pulled out from under us. it is much more difficult to vet those that need to continue through the vetting process and make sure americans have safe passage to the airport. we've been on the administration for months now to be working ■o the vetting process, to make sure we're working with the interpreters to get them safely out of the country. the state department has drug its feet. it's moved so slowly. now we're at the point where our afghan partners are in jeopardy with the taliban because they weren't able to get their vetting done on time. it's important we keep pressing on with this. if there are afghans that need evacuated that aren't vetted, we have third country partners working with us. we should be doing everything we can to assist those who assisted us fo

let's go straight to abc's chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz. martha, you were on the ground in afghanistan a month ago and met with a taliban elder who told you at the time he had no doubt the taliban would take over kabul. was the writing on the wall that this outcome was inevitable? >> reporter: it was, linsey. that trip to kabul was eye opening for me. everything felt different, and that warning from the taliban elder was chilling, but u.s. intelligence did not predict the speed of this taliban takeover. they underestimated the taliban and overestimated the afghan forces. senior pentagon leaders were saying they were hopeful that the afghan forces could handle this, and they could not, but however anyone feels about whether we should have stayed in afghanistan or gotten out, it is how we did in that is so troublesome. the u.s. should have had a plan to get the interpreters and vulnerable afghans who have helped the americans out before the u.s. military left. istead, many will likely be killed, linsey. >> and, of course, just last month pres

meantime, martha maccallum joins us right now. martha, i want you to react to this. obviously happened during your show when the president made a comment about forever wars and trying to end them. this is from the president a short while ago. >> we were left with a simply decision, either follow-through on the commitment made by the last administration and leave afghanistan or say we weren't leaving and commit another tens of thousands more troops going back to war. that was the choice, the real choice between leaving or escalating. i was not going to extend this forever war. >> neil: what did you think of that, martha? >> martha: one of the things that struck me was sort of a tandem comment that he made, neil. he said if you're 20 years old, you've never known america at peace. now, you know, i think that there's a question as to whether or not we were in an active war in the past several years or whether or not we were stabilizing the situation and sort of holding the peace. we have several situations around the globe where we have a presence in japan, in south kor

will carry out. >> and expand on that a bit, martha.t's been a gut-wrenching day for the military. you've been on the ground in recent weeks with our soldiers. how will this terror strike, do you think, impact the final days of the mission and the morale going forward? >> you know, i've talked to so many members of the military this past week who are so upset about what they were seeing anyway, so worried about their afghan partners. and now not only to lose afghans but all of these marines and navy corps men and army -- it is a devastating, a devastating thing to be around. and i think all the more devastating, juju, because, frankly, it has been a long time since the military has suffered a mass casualty like this. at least a decade in afghanistan. we were getting out of these conflicts, and all these beautiful pictures of our service members helping people, going out there, taking babies, pouring water on little kids. this was a missio that made them feel better, that they were trying to get all of these people out of there, evacuate

martha? >> andrew and kaley, one of the things we all have to think about is the women of afghanistan. the young girls in afghanistan. women and young girls under taliban rule 20 years ago and they are now going to be ruled by the taliban again. there was a young girl, who i spoke to, a little over a month ago when i was in kabul, who was badly injured in a bombing that killed 80 others. in her school. she was so determined to go back to school. taliban said they can go back to school. i, for one, don't believe them. the taliban has a purpose. it is shar lthat. that is something we have to keep our eye on. there is an incredible woman, who i spoke to who started a business under the taliban. secretly making dresses. that business has grown. i spoke to her over a month ago. she doesn't want to leave the country. she wants to stay and fight even though the taliban is coming in. she sent her own family out but she is determined to stay. i think all of us have to hope and i think all of us just h
